billcoe Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Click here for irony "JERSEYVILLE, Ill. - A teenager carrying a Bible and shouting "I want Jesus" was shot twice with a police stun gun and later died at a St. Louis hospital, authorities said." Story later adds: 156 deaths from police stun guns in the last 5 years. Who knew? In case you need a reason to stop when Johnny Law tells ya too. Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 There's no question, regardless of what Taser says, that this thing can kill, and police need to keep that in mind when they think "Do I REALLY need to taser this guy?" It's a great tool to have, but shouldn't be used lightly as a "safe" alternative to just using brawn to control uncooperative people. Senseless death pisses me off. Quote

Weekend_Climberz Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 So, the question that begs to be asked is whether the ranking of St Louis as the most unsafe town in the USA is because the cops are gonna beat you down if you visit there? Quote
SmallShoes Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 He wanted Jesus, and he got Jesus. Note to ClimbingPanther: While I don't know about the particular model of Taser used, many of these weapons are classified not as "nonlethal" but "less lethal." This story seems to highlight why. It's a great tool to have, but shouldn't be used lightly as a "safe" alternative to just using brawn to control uncooperative people. I don't know if it was used "lightly as a 'safe' alternative to just using brawn." Many "uncooperative" people become very violent very quickly and subduing someone with brawn can go from in control to someone dead or more seriously hurt than they needed to be in an instant. Brawn is not necessarily safer for anyone. Granted I don't know the details in this case but it seems that after weighing the options tazing seemed safer to the officer than grappling with the guy. Then again the guy did end up dead in the end. Quote
