RemoWilliams Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 All you guys talking about sanctions against China for human rights abuses are hilarious. China owns the US. At any moment they could unload all the billions in US T-Bills they bought and banrupt the nation. Think they give a shit? Quote

JayB Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Except that in so doing they'd nuke the value of these same T-Bills, which make up a non-trivial part of the states assets, and then they'd have to turn around and invest at least as much money buying dollar-denominated assets of some sort to keep their currency stable relative to the dollar, lest they crush the competitiveness of their exports and the leading market for them all at once. The T-Bills are like a financial suicide belt around their waists, and I doubt they'll be inclined to detonate it aboard the American bus any time soon. Quote

Choose the appropriate setting, then throw your hands up and exclaim " So typically American. Tell us the hard truth - but make sure it's sugarcoated and doesn't hurt to much!!!!"... Then dig out the latest Chomsky tome, crank-up the Manu Chao on the ipod and slyly but furtively dart eyes about the room to see if the euro/latin/backpacker chicks within earshot happen to notice the dissafected/yankee-dissident/sophisticate/citizen-of-the-world-that-has-yet-to-emigrate-despite-his-grievances who's so different from his more noxious gun-toting-banjo-playing-sisterhumping-fundamentalist countrymen, understands the sheer infallibility of the grand globo-euro-lefto consensus, etc - and stands out from all of the other dissaffected/sophisticate/yankee-dissident types cruising around tyring to churn up a little action with the well-rehearsed Chomsky/Zinn/Said riff while they're traveling between semesters. And what happened to that link about ad hominem attacks and the logical fallacies associated with them? Oh that's right Gary posted it so I guess no one read it. Well let's continue with the sardonic/cynical remarks about the opposition and ignore the issue. Seems to be doing working well for our government. You know, if anyone's looking for a cause with some immediate, American-style gratification, we do have an election coming up. Canvassing to bring out infrequent voters will decide this one, as always. Plus, you can always continue the debate with your canvassing partner in between having various doors slammed in your face. It's fun! Anyone interested in getting infrequent voters to cast their ballots for the Dems in the Ballard area, PM me. We can use all the help we can get. Hot latinas welcome. Nicely countered with the same disdainful faux-optimism I was criticizing! We could go about this endgame forever with people only evaluating us on the form and wit of our retorts and not the content of our speach .... and that'd be just like politics Somehow I think the Indians and Chinese are laughing harder though. knotzen Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 There is immoral, um, "inappropriate" killing all over the world, every day. Heck, there was even a homicide here in Issaquah this weekend (the perp set the body afire to wipe out the evidence). I have no control over it. I really believe that. speaking up =/not caring, and empathy, and a desire to help powerless people If you have a practical idea of how I, knotzen, can stop the killing and persecution and pain of hundreds of thousands of fellow humans, I am listening, GGK. glassgowkiss Posted October 16, 2006 Author Posted October 16, 2006 for starters i don't buy this bs about not antagonizing china. that was the same rethoric used in dealings with soviets. and finally reagan told them to fuck off and they did. yes, you can change thing- first by voting. someone could write an official letter signed by cc.com condoning the incident. once i was told for eacch signed name they count 800 votes. also one thing i'd like to mention. this is not an isolated incident. this is deliberate and systematic extermination of the nation. tvashtarkatena Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 (edited) for starters i don't buy this bs about not antagonizing china. that was the same rethoric used in dealings with soviets. and finally reagan told them to fuck off and they did. That's a bit of a re-writing of history. Soviet failure in Afghanistan and burgeoning pro-democracy movements in client states had much more to do with their collapse than Carter's (Reagan continued and expanded it) military buildup. In addition, whatever influence Reagan had on the USSR was due to the rise of Gorbachev, who was uniquely receptive to some of Reagan's ideas. Their relations were quite friendly, as I recall. We didn't tell the soviets to fuck off (they had too many nukes pointed our way for that...unlike China, which never has)...we wooed them. At that point, leaders such as Gorbachev knew the gig, militarily and financially, was up anyway. Fast forward to China today. Our watered down response to North Korea's recent fireworks display illustrates the leverage we have over China. Not much. Our president isn't quite the diplomat Reagan was, to say the least. China has no Gorbachev. And China, unlike the Soviets, is far from collapsing. Change is most likely when you deal realistically with the world that is. As horrific as the events in Tibet may be, the US government couldn't give less of a damn. It's got its back against the wall in two failing wars. Iran's emerging as the #1 regional power (you can soon preface that with 'nuclear') in the middle East and the second largest oil producing nation. Much of that oil will likely go to, you guessed it, China. What, exactly, are we going to deny China at this point, when we say 'fuck off?' A dialogue with China about how bloody snow on the Tibetan plateau will smear their image during their coming out party in 2008 would probably do more good than a thousand hollow 'fuck you's'. If I were you, I'd hook up with whatever organization has made the most progress at making such a dialogue happen. My guess is that it's probably not cc.com. Hey, what part of Carter's massive military buildup are you referring to? His B-1 program? The MX missile system? And I'll bet GGK can school you backwards and forwards concerning tovarish Mikhail Sergeyevich... Quote
