Toast Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Montrail has just been aquired by Columbia News Link Quote
chirp Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 WooT! Soon to change! Incoming dumbdown, mebbe they will make a line of via ferrata specific footwear now? Montrail is known for making authentic, premium footwear products for the outdoor enthusiast and the brand has an excellent reputation for fit, quality and use of technology in its footwear Quote
Koolaid Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I'll sell anything for 15 million, I'm suprised that's all they were worth. Quote
shapp Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Not that I am a big Columbia fan one way or the other, but I did get a cheap pair of Columbia "approach" type sneakers for about $40 last year and they have held up very well to some D3 and D4 thrashing. Quote
cj001f Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I'm suprised that's all they were worth. Columbia bought Mountain Hardwear for $36 million. I'd say Mountain Hardwear is easily worth 2.4x Montrail. Outdoor businesses aren't worth squat, usually last years sales, barrier of entry to low, brand value too ephemeral. Quote
Greta Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 My figures indicate that the value is closer to 2.5 to 2.6x. Either way, its adds up to another disappointment. I wish I would have known Montrail was for sale. MHW's price tag was a bit out of my range. Quote
DirtyHarry Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Remember those day-glo neon Columbia ski jackets? You know you owned one in Middle School. Admit it. Quote
ncascademtns Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Don't feel so bad Toast. $15 million in assets and having such a good reputation deserves to be scooped up by a major manufacturer. It would have been nicer though if it would have been someone like The North Face or Black Diamond or etc. Columbia's stuff is rather sub-pair for climbing. Quote
Dru Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I have an amazing multicolor fleece turban/beret made by Columbia Quote
cj001f Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I have an amazing multicolor fleece turban/beret made by Columbia They should have made a coat out of it and called it the "Dream" Quote
Dru Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I have the "Dream" fleece coat by MEC! OMFG you need sunglasses to even look at it. Quote
barkernews Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Let's hope Columbia's quality doesn't rub off on Mtn Hardware and Montrail. That's a bummer. My Montrails are the best approach shoes I've ever owned... Quote
Geek_the_Greek Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Wasn't Mtn Hardwear originally started by former TNF owners (employees?) who were pissed that TNF was selling out? Hmmm. I suppose time and money will cure most principles. Quote

Alpinfox Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 TNF is now owned by Marshall's or Ross or some shit like that. I forget whom exactly. I think Montrail's shoes are shit. I've only owned one pair and they fell apart. I've had friends who have had montrails and their's have all fallen apart/delaminated/split/prematurely worn out/etc. Their rock shoes are the ugliest on the market. Their rubber is shit (and no I don't mean "THE SHIT"). I think some of their trail running type shoes (goretex sneakers) were OK from what I've heard. It's nice that they WERE based in Seattle. Maybe that will change now? Overall, I give Montrail - Sorry Toast. Quote
