Jake Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/09/26/helens.quakes.ap/index.html Possible eruption coming soon on St. Helens? Quote
olyclimber Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 How much are you willing to wager? And what kind of odds can we get here? Quote
Jake Posted September 27, 2004 Author Posted September 27, 2004 Beats me. Would be cool to see an eruption though. Quote
Gaper_Jeffy Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 Best case scenarios is an eruption of viscous lava which grows the lava dome. We need many of such erruptions to get St Helens back to its former height. I can dream can't I? Quote
ChrisT Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 Mt. St. Helens is now off limits to hikers and all climbing permits have been suspended for the time being because of recent seismic activity. 10-12 earthquakes in the 2-2.8 range in the past 24 hours. Just heard this on the radio. They're calling it "volcanic unrest". Quote
glacier Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 They're calling it "volcanic unrest". Then when is blows they will refer to it as a "volcanic malfunction." Quote
cj001f Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 They're calling it "volcanic unrest". Then when is blows they will refer to it as a "volcanic malfunction." I thought it was so they could involve Homeland Security Quote
Dru Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 If there is a big ash fall can you ski volcanic freshiez? Will the ash plume bury Smiff tuff under fresh tuff? Quote
Dr_Crash Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I would be so p... off if it blew and changed before I could ski it. Didn't work out this year and I was looking forward to some freshies... "The mountain will always be there" eh? Probably not in its current shape drC Quote
ashw_justin Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 They're calling it "volcanic unrest". Then when is blows they will refer to it as a "volcanic malfunction." I thought it was so they could involve Homeland Security yeah me too! Quote
ChrisT Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 The local news channel has reported that the lava dome has actually moved...about an inch in height and an inch and half to the north. Also the earthquake acitivity has increased suggesting a magma erruption. Gosh I never thought I would see this volcano blow twice in my lifetime! Kind of funny how the reporters are trying to get solid information from the scientists but they refuse to speculate... Quote
iain Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Volcanos have a habit of making scientists look pretty silly, so I'm not surprised about the lack of speculation. P.S. I wonder if the guys who decided to build the Johnston Observatory feel pretty silly for building a multi-million dollar observatory in memory of someone killed by the volcano in that exact area, now that there are signs of activity. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 anyone happen to look east towards hood yesterday about 5? there was a 'tall' cloud above hood in a relatively cloudless sky. well, it WAS a cloud, but i'm not the only one who had to double take. with the activity up north and down south (http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc51147892.html) maybe the entire P-Rim is going down. see ya in arizona bay Quote
Kiwi Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 And I haven't even hiked/climbed it yet! :-\ Quote
Mark_Husbands Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 It already erupted but a conspiracy of scientists, land managers, and KIRO 7 covered it up. Quote
Mal_Con Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 They are waiting til after the debate to post it but the Bush folks are pushin to run the story during the debate Quote
ivan Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 shouldn't someone be shitting in their pants right now about how the volcano is actually erupting? look's pretty wimpy though... Quote
Bogen Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 got it on the news right now. Choppers are flying right above it! They are calling it a "burp" Quote
badvoodoo Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Right now it's venting gas buildup. Actual eruption will be at the sign of magma, which is still about 1/2 a mile down, but likely building pressure fast given the size of the steam cloud. Quote
dmuja Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 KIRO channel 7 in seattle had the most awsome video taken from a plane. Beautiful explosions on the cone but only lasted a couple minutes. sweet! Quote

That's some heavy irony at work there. Quote
iain Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Here's the funniest bit of news so far: Yamhill Co. Schools: Yamhill-Carlton- Y-C high, Yamhill Grade and Carlton Elementary closing at 1:30 due to volcanic action. All walkers must have parents check students out through office. Buses will transport students at 1:30 That's farther away than where I live! It was interesting to see the seismic stations of Mt. Hood and Rainier, how the activity is detected as far south as the Sisters. There was a rescue on Mt. Hood yesterday from someone falling down over the bergschrund. While we were up there a HUGE amount of the Steel Cliffs came crashing off. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, the scale was incredible. This happened along with debris fall I have not witnessed before on the mountain. I can only speculate that this was due to the seismic events up on Helens. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 crazy! not to say you weren't busy up there, but did you get any pics of it? Quote
iain Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Some others did, I'll see if I can get one. Not that you could tell in that pile of rubble! The dust cloud was huge. It was very loud at Timberline, apparently. We were heading up Crater Rock and looked over to see what looked like the whole mountain shifting. It made us nervous to be underneath Crater Rock. Several huge boulders came rocketing off, crossing over the ropes connecting our litter, right where the litter had been 5 minutes earlier! Quote
iain Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Don't have an action shot yet. Everything in the circle came off. Quote
