catbirdseat Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 The place is across the street from Eightmile Campground, and the event appears to be the Mountaineers Alpine Scrambling Course, which I took in 1997. The instructor's name is Bonnie. The students are usually total novices, as was I at the time. They actually learn a lot at this field trip. Quote
Dru Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 it's good to see the instructor is wearing gaitors with no snow anywhere around, even though she can't actually commit to the uniform and wear shorts over polypro. Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 One of the instructors is wearing black and if you look closely, you'll see she is in uniform. Quote
Dru Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 i thought instructor was on the left. the person on the slabv appears to dress for climbing in the andy cairns fashion school. Quote
snoboy Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Somehow, Scotty's sig is so perfect for this pic: Â "Go straight down, if anything gets in your way....turn" Better off Dead Quote

Bill_Simpkins Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 "Get a crash pad on that rock below him immediately!" Â Â On a serious note: Just put yourself in their position. Imagine NEVER looking at rock in such a way as to climb it before. You have to teach from the very start. Just getting used to it. It could be a BIG deal for some people. Â The instructor should have told her to take the gaitors off. There is no need to wear them to "get used" to them. There is no major adjustment period for them. It's like wearing a condom when your jerking off. Quote

I just enlarged the photo and its true, the "instructor/spotter" is in Mountaineers uniform and everyone except the "climber" is wearing gaiters, though the girl on the left is wearing her pants OVER her gaiters. iain Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 laugh if you must but if you have ever had to lead someone down talus or scree who does not have an understanding of the terrain...  it's like waiting up for the chumps who don't head up hood with some planks on their feet. Quote

I went for a hike a couple of years ago with someone who had never done any kind of outdoor anything. We found ourselves traversing a large, fairly steep slope of late-season snow, and I had to show him how to kick platforms in the snow for his feet, and then how to plunge step coming down the steeper bits. It was a pretty non-descript hike for me, but seeing the expression on his face, watching the lights turning on inside as a whole new world opened up for him...that was pretty cool. Â to those with the patience and energy it takes to teach the true beginners. Quote
Necronomicon Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Funny, I don't recognize any of these people as someone I may have run into in the mountains. Hmmm... Quote

I miss that guy.  Second pic is just wrong. If those chicks are trying to spot him, they are doing a great job, but, where is the old guy's pride? If they are casting a spell, I wonder which one?  Keep em comin scott! HILARIOUS! Quote
