Salomon Acquires Outdoor Innovator ARC'TERYX

Salomon, the "Freedom Action Sports" unit of adidas-Salomon, announced today that a contract to acquire Canadian outdoor specialist ARC'TERYX Equipment Inc. has been signed. This transaction will allow Salomon to expand its presence in the fast-growing new sports and outdoor categories. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Salomon's mission is to provide cutting-edge products for the sports that are based on unrestricted sensation, style and adventure. In the years ahead apparel and footwear will lead the growth of Salomon. This purchase will help Salomon expand and develop its presence in North America and its technical apparel business.

Vancouver-based ARC'TERYX, founded in 1991, specializes in technical outerwear and layering systems, performance backpacks and climbing equipment.

"ARC'TERYX provides outdoor enthusiasts and professionals with the highest performing and technically advanced equipment possible," said Jean-Luc Diard, President of Salomon. "ARC'TERYX has an excellent management team. We have full confidence in this team's ability to achieve significant growth for the ARC'TERYX brand".

"We needed someone who agreed that pushing the limits of what is technically possible is the essence of our success and is committed to fuelling that vision," said Jeremy Guard, President of ARC'TERYX. "With its historical focus on active sports and top performance, Salomon is a superb fit for us moving forward."

So what's the big deal? Salomon bought them. I like Salomon stuff. Adidas is marginally okay, too. It's not like how the North Face got bought up by Vanity Fair, putting them in the same family as Wrangler Jeans and Eastpak. Bitch bitch moan moan. Jon, if Wal-Mart offered you $10,000 bucks for this site you'd be laughing all the way to Cabo... [laf]

I'm not upset about the fact that an actually decent company bought them, it's just the trend where the big guys buy companies that were perfectly fine on their own. I'd like to know what the reasons where for selling, hopefully not greed. Are they going to move manufacturing somewhere else now? Is that going to change the quality of their products?

I'm sure that Arcteryx is in the red now. There's is a real small niche business anyway and the yearly design and material changes have to cost them dear. Now with the economy tits up it only makes sense that they merge. Economics 101. Will the quality still be there...that remains to be seen.
