tomcat
mattp said: I may be misinterpreting Tomcat's remarks, but I think he said that those who have served in the military have more right to comment on the horrors of war than those who have not. I say that is bullshit. If you have served in combat, you know first hand what it is like in a way that I can not. But that does not give you any greater right to comment on whether this or any other war is a good idea. Â Remember, nobody here is arguing that Iraq is not in violation. I don't think anybody here is rooting for Saddam. The question at hand is not whether we support the troops, but whether this invasion is a good idea at this juncture. Â I don't buy the argument that nobody should criticize the war until it is over. As citizens of a free country with a relatively free media and with democratically elected leaders we have a civic duty to think and talk about what our leaders are doing in our names. If we believe the government is not acting morally, and if we believe that we might even in some small way be able to influence events by expressing that belief, we have a moral duty to display our objection to what is being done in our names. Â I was responding to Necronomicon's idea that I need to put my money where my mouth is and enlist .. I wanted him to know I've already done my time. Â I do think people should have to serve in the military .. not because I don't think people who don't aren't qualified to comment on these issues (I never said that), but merely because A LOT of individuals take for granted the freedoms they receive by being a US citizen. Maybe if they did their time in the military, they'd understand this a little better.

None of this shit comes up in person .. it's all about drinking beer and climbing mountains at Pub Club. You should come through to the Seattle PC next week. Â I know that goofball. I'm sure I'd have a great time at curly pubey club and enjoy jackin' jaws with everybody. I'm just being my difficult old self.
Dru
Hatred can last a long time after the events that caused it:  CASE IN POINT:  Wednesday, Mar 19, 2003  Former soccer player bitten in revenge attack 19 years after FA Cup game  CORBY, England (AP) - Nineteen years after scoring the winning goal in an FA Cup soccer semifinal, former Watford striker George Reilly had his ear bitten off by a fan of the losing team. Reilly scored the lone goal in Watford's 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the 1984 FA Cup semifinal. After retiring from soccer, he became a bricklayer. Reilly was working on a construction site earlier this week in Corby in central England when another workman punched him to the ground, chewed off his right ear and whispered, "Plymouth" into the other ear.  The unidentified attacker fled. No arrests were made.  The former Watford, Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion striker needed 50 stitches to sew his ear back on and eight more stitches for a gash above his eye.  "I can't believe someone held a grudge for that long," Reilly was quoted Wednesday in the Sun tabloid newspaper. "I know people have strong loyalties but this is taking it a bit far."  The 1984 game was the closest Plymouth has been to reaching the final of English soccer's most prestigious cup competition. Watford lost to Everton in the final and has never won the trophy.

mattp
Tomcat- I believe that we gain a greater sense of our freedom and where we stand in the world when we travel outside this country and when we actually pay attention to what is going on throughout the world than we could ever gain by being forced to serve in the military for two years or whatever. I know plenty of folks who have been in the military who don't seem to have thought one iota about what it means to live in a free country. Some of them even think it is treasonous to speak one's mind!!!

Szyjakowski
Email from my friend: These are (or so I'm told) actual signs from the Federal Terrorist Preparedness website - http://www.ready.gov (The captions have been added for clarification.) If you have set yourself on fire, do not run If you spot terrorism, blow your anti-terrorism whistle. If you are Vin Diesel, yell really loud. If you spot a terrorist arrow, pin it against the wall with your shoulder If your building collapses, give yourself a blowjob while waiting to be rescued. If you are sprayed with an unknown substance, stand and think about it instead of seeing a doctor. Use your flashlight to lift the walls right off of you! The proper way to eliminate smallpox is to wash with soap, water and at least one(1) armless hand. Michael Jackson is a terrorist. If you spot someone with dead eyes and no nose, run the fuck away. Hurricanes, penguins, dead fish, and the biohazard symbol have a lot in common. Think about it. Be on the lookout for terrorists with pinkeye and leprosy. Also, they tend to rub their hands together manically. If a door is closed, karate chop it open. If irradiated, try to absorb as much of it as possible with your groin region. After 5 minutes and 12 seconds, however, you will become sterile! After exposure to radiation you may have mutated to gigantic dimensions: watch your head. If you've become a radiation mutant with a deformed hand, remember to close the window. No one wants to see that shit. -- If you hear the Backstreet Boys, Michael Bolton or Yanni on the radio, cower in the corner or run like hell. If you are trapped under falling debris, conserve oxygen by not farting. -- A one-inch thick piece of plywood should be sufficient protection against radiation. disclaimer: I didn't write these captions as I have much work to do at work. tomcat
I object to the individuals who don't have a pissing notion of the implications of this conflict. Many of the war protesters I see are wearing T-Shirts with really ignorant slogans on them. For example, "No war for oil". Where have these shits been living? This war is not about oil at all .. and the very notion that is based on oil is founded on pure ignorance. I hear the war protesters chanting IGNORANT things like, "1-2-3-4 we dont need this racist war." SHUT THE FUCK UP! This war is not about racism, this war is not about oil, this war is not about greed, this war is about removing a very large threat to humanity. A lot of these war protesters are uneducated and ignorant .. and their ignorance stems from them either trying to fit in with the peace crowd because their friends are a part of it, or because they are feeling touchy-feely with naive disregard for the reality of the situation. I have thus far not heard a single argument against the war which holds any water. I haven't seen a single argument against the Iraqi invasion on this thread that has any merit, other than people's feelings. Yes, people are going to be killed, but I've said it before .. it sure beats the alternative .. which is waking up to find the whole world suffering from a biological attack. And biological weapons can be a bit on the nasty side ... foaming from the mouth, internal bleeding, gasping for air, blindness, death ... the effects are said to be extremely painful and spread ferociously. Do you care to find out first hand how detrimental the effects of Biological weapons can be? You can't just sit back and wait for the inevitable to happen all the while claiming your love for humanity is the perfect argument .. if this is you, you are living in LALA land! You can't just sit back and wait for the inevitable to happen all the while claiming your love for humanity is the perfect argument .. if this is you, you are living in LALA land! Â this war is not about safety or liberation...it is a territorial dispute between two groups of alpha male primates. you can see all the primate behaviour on display on CNN (human) or Discovery Channel (baboon, chimp) same deal. Â Social grooming is very good at releasing stress among primates. In bonobos, there is much less violence observed than in other primates. This is because they have a lot more sex. Primates that get laid often, apparently do not need to fight. This is why armies, etc segregate the sexes immediatelty during training. Long periods of no sex promote violent behaviour. Â In male primates, testosterone is secreted in the successful male after two males fight. Older male primates will bully weaker members of their, or nearby groups, in order to maintain their sexual drive. Â Gulf War 2 = expensive Viagra substitute.
