specialed Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 If you are about to climb a very popular and high quality 5.9 crack at the crag and and a party of two has just finished leading and following the climb (belay at top with walk-off) and the said party yells down that you and your partner can not climb the crack because they "have" the climb and want to top-rope it a bunch of times even though they just climbed it: do you have a "right" to start climbing it anyway despite the other parties objections? Or does the other party have the "right" to claim possession of the climb for as long as they want? Or do you have the "right" to climb it, but shouldn't out of courtesy? Hypothetically, if you were in this position, how would you act? Quote
RuMR Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 I think lead attempts always have priority...might not be worth the battle if, say, the guy weighs 250... Quote
iain Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 since they can come down on top of you on rap and kick you in the head ala the a-team assaulting some l.a. skyscraper glass, I say they make the call. I say you have right of way though. I bet the mountaineers will be referenced in this thread, you heard it here first folks. Quote

JoshK Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 I'd say if they've already led it then it's your turn to go. If they are big enough dicks to not care regardless, I'd say it's worth your while to just go climb something else. Quote

fern Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 If it was a busy crowded day, and I could style the thing and be outta way in a few minutes, I'd just ignore them ... that's what I've done in the past. I'm not gonna ask if anyone minds if I take the last brownie either If I thought I (or partner) was gonna thrutch and flail or if it was an empty day and lots to choose from I'd move on. Quote
Dru Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 crag rage whip out your .45 and threaten em OR: grab their packs sitting at the base of the climb, and run away with their gear Quote

I have to agree with Fern as usual And I like what Rumor said too. lead atempt has priority. Quote
iain Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 or go partway up and have the second pee in the crack...sabotage 'em old school style. Quote
freeclimb9 Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 Find out what car they drove, then halfway flatten all the tires (enough air to slow 'em down, but not enough to strand them), and write witty things in sun-screen on the windows. Quote

fern Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 "lead atempt has priority." well I don't actually believe this. I don't think anybody can claim "priority" or "right" or anything like that. But if a person is actually in the process of leading a climb you could 'cause them an accident if you involve yourself, so you pretty much have to back off ... if I can use that to MY advantage by hopping on the route while your back is turned then I will ... whether you think it is my "right" to do so or not. Dru Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 "might makes right" hence the guy with the .45 has priority. "power comes out of the barrel of a gun" - Mao bring Greg W with you to all crowded crags if neither of you has a gun remember its easier to throw stuff down from top of crag, than it is to throw stuff up from bottom of crag in Euroland, in this situation, you just start climbing, and when they throw ropes down, you tie the ropes together and clip into the knot, then drop a coil on them afterwards, in pink goretex gaiters. Quote
Bill_Simpkins Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 My reason for saying "Climb something else", is that it's not worth my time at the crag to argue with people. I'd rather go climb some other middle of the road route than argue with some topropers. Also, if it's SO important to you that you climb THAT climb, you should have gotten there earlier. Quote

Bronco Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 When they throw their ropes down, you and your partner hang off of them so they can't rap down until they agree to let you have the crack. Or you could go climb somethin else. Quote
