I am interested in what your choice in cordless roto-hammers is? Dont turn me into a over boltin' freak... cause I am interested in one for our shop. I haven't had a cordless to use in many years and there have been lots of changes in technology. Here is what I want: Light weight for overhead work- less than 10 lbs SDS bit collet mostly 1/4" pinning but able to dis place 1/2" holes when needed 18v or 24v And most importantly # of penetrations per charge. I realize that loyalty to Hilti runs pretty thick but their service record has been poor with our shop and I refuse to consider inviting more problems in the door with their products (although their bit technology is superior to all other sds bits I've used, thats a different issue to their actual tools). Cost of tool/battery life not a huge issue. I want a proven performer. I know there are plenty of folks around that are qualified to offer a opinion so dont be shy. Whats the best? Besides Thanks Smoker

CC writes: I'm no engineer so dont get too technical with me or my head will spin. 2 points to make here, 1) Most of us are standing at ice belays, with some ability to move about to avoid being bombed so a fall past the anchor onto the belay device of any distance will most certainly be felt in a most unpleasant way, bringing the strongest of us to our knees or possibly to the breaking point as the leader plummits past. (Remember that a 10 leader fall with no gear in equates to 20+ before the belayer is wrenched down in line with the fall) 2) The need for a multi directional anchor is paramount if you plan on belaying a leader that one minute is 30 ft out with no gear and above you (hence the need to position yourself in the line of anticipated pull if said ballsy leader ever does place gear) but the belayer must also be able to move should ballsy leader launch from said 30' lead and change the anticipated direction of pull. When the slack comes out of the system the belayer had best be oriented towards the fall (downward) and the anchor truly bomber and multi directional.

Climbing shoes/boots and stink go hand in hand. I have worn socks, normally in cold conditions. Air out your shoes when not on your feet and you'll be in fine company.

I have an x-15 straight shaft that I take when I pack 2 tools into the alpine. Cheap and solid tool. Maybe a bit on the heavy side. It works for me.

Page Top!!! So what have we learned? Back up our rap anchors and Dont use your climbing rope for a hand line.

Good read Freeclimb.

As a general rule of thumb, when I am rappeling a route using existing slings 1- always inspect the primary piece of webbing, knot tails and wear. 2-If possible, throw on a longer back-up. Have the first descend and weight the rope normally, if all is good pull the back-up when the second raps. Sorry to hear about the accident. Rest and heal

I once sat around a fire late at nite. Armed with a 5th of wiskey and a club, I dropped a few crackers on the ground and proceded to get drunk and thump snaffle at the same time. By the end of the night there were little piles of em'. I even used a few as bait
