I'm assuming your friend Jason probably felt like there was no other choice to make, which is a true test of what makes someone not only a hero, but an excellent human being. I'm glad everyone else is okay, and I really hope your friend will be too. I'm sure he will!!! You guys handled this situation in the best possible way even though I'm sure you wish you were with your friend right now. I'm sorry this happened.

Update: Just waiting on a few illustrations by our very own Zac Reisner and it will be ready to send to the printers. Of course I ran out of moolah, so it may be only available online for a bit. It's looking good, and the winners will still be getting their free copies!

I'm down for a MTB forum if we get a Southwest and Rockies (seperate of course) Forum. It would be cool to have an "other sports" forum that includes biking, running, and kayaking - althouhgh I despise water sports. All I got is mountain project out here!

you guys should come mtn biking with me in SLC, we've got some sweet trails. One ride is 30 miles of singletrack with 4k of uphill, but 7k of desent!

I feel your pain. I approached it 6 times until Ivan and I finally did the N.Ridge (which only has one pitch of 5.9 and one pitch of 5.8 the rest is 4th-low 5th) -

hard to discern what is fad, and what is good science...even with a book or research paper to back it up. iluka had the best answer so far imho. I was suspecting that the increased water retention would be locked away outside the vascular system. links like john and fern offered are interesting, but any research done by a company (see antioxidant drink research!) always makes me wonder.

I'll try and read those articles at work tomorrow. That whole oxygenated water is so retarded. What part of the lung connects to the stomach? Same with oxygen bars. Hmmm, free radicals anyone?
-
would up'ing your sodium and potassium increase your water retention and would that retained water be usable...or just pissed away?

Althetes often use carb loading to keep from a caloric deficit race time, but water is usually readily available...not always for climbers. One thing we do is chug as much as we can at the base or at the car. Is this enough? Just eating a bunch of gu pre-climb wouldn't fill your glycogen store (although it would help)...is the same true with water. I'm looking for concrete evidence (i.e. articles or published info) that explains how much water you need to drink and how long you need to drink it for to reach your total body's water carrying capacity? I'm expecting the answer to be just drink water until your pee is clear and copious, and continue drinking water until your climb starts.
