The vote in Hawaii has traditionally favored incumbents, irrespective of party. That, plus the fact that Hawaii has its first Republican Governor in years has probably contributed to the swing. Here is a link to a recent poll taken in Hawaii showing a dead heat. The economy in Hawaii does favor a strong military, however the economy is growing towards industry (Bio-Tech)that would benefit from Democratic President.
