If you do get the Explores, spend the extra and get the breaks for them. Their leashes suck. The Velcro is shitty, they are not quite long enough, they suck. Also if I get caught in an avy (knock on wood I don't) but I don't really want my skis flying around behind me as I get sucked into that vortex.

If I can find a decent weather window, a ride up there, and probably a partner; A winter climb of Rainier is #1 on my list. Say you get up to Muir and it is just dumping and shitty, well then you get face shots all the way back to your car. If things are good, you get a ski off the summit.... What's not to like?

What are the predictions for this coming winter? From what I have heard we are in a second year La Nina, and it should be similar to what we all rocked last winter! What have other people heard?

[TR] Three Sisters Wilderness - ThreeSistersMarathon 9/5/2008
Maine-iac replied to rocky_joe's topic in Oregon Cascades
We were on the correct ridge of S. Sister. We popped up no more than 20 yards away from the true summit, when we crested the summit cone. The thing that made that ridge hard was that the sun had set by the time we were halfway up it. As for the starting time, maybe an hour or so earlier... but also one group member had never climbed any of the Sisters, and the other two group members had only done South. Here is a link to photos, since I can never figure out how to actually put them in a TR on this site. http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2184111&l=ee76b&id=11519689 -
Really what the hell are people thinking. The life expectancy in the US is 77, and this bloke is 72. The guy has malignant melanoma, and apparently his brain is going because he could not remember how many houses he has. That and all of the other stressors involved with destroying humanity means that statistically he is going to die very very soon. As for that women... she should just drive her ATV off a cliff. Sometimes I wish people would pull their thumbs, or heads in the case of a few people, out of their asses.

One time I went to the State Fair and there was a line for the Ferris Wheel, Imagine that. Fact of the matter is on a busy weekend like labor, day everybody and their dog gets out. Even on normal weekends from what I have seen at Smith all of the classics are taken. I think I went there 6 or 7 times before I ever lead, let alone climbed, one of the "Bucket" routes, which I and a few others consider classics. You just need to spend time up in the gullies or on the backside. But on the plus side, Labor Day is one of the last holidays before the rain/snow comes.... So fresh alpine will be back in! -
I have the same question. I have been trying to compare them from many different companies, and none of them say about fill weights. Any thoughts on Patagonia's DAS, or Down parka, or OR's Megaplume?

F*CK this shit. First person to take the rolling pin out of their asses, I'll vote for. If neither removes the pin then I am moving to Scotland. It is similar to the PNW and has much better whiskey.

From reading the Teton Gravity thread, it seems like the new BD boots have a wide forefoot and a slim heel. Here are some reviews which I found helpful. Garmont boots: http://www.wildsnow.com/?p=1024 BD Factor: http://www.wildsnow.com/?p=1012
 -
I also saw that Garmont came out with a few new boots, which a few days ago when i looked at their site I had not known about, so I will probably look into those as well. Rotary, what year are you?
 -
Anybody use or seen the new BD boots? I am looking to get a pair of new Alpine/AT boots and just looking at my options. I am also looking at a pair of Garmonts.

Just called Petzl wondering why the Sarken is not in the States, and it was released in Europe in June, and is due to be in the States in september.
 -
A friend of mine has the task of cutting a brand new Petzl climbing rope (still in packaging) up into 8 foot sections because some bone head bought the wrong one and returned it.

This is awful, kids should not be given the power to wield a weapon like a gun, while unsupervised. A similar thing happened last fall here in Oregon. A guy was riding on the back of a 4-wheeler (he and a friend were driving down a dirt road in the woods) and saw movement in/behind a bush and the guy just randomly fired a shot into the bush. Next thing he knows, a college aged kid falls out into the road. He shot the kid in the neck, severing his spinal column. I don't know whether to say thank god the kid lived or not, but people need to get their fingers off the triggers and put them back up their asses where they are the vast majority of the time.

http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Main/57986/Number/777653#Post777653 Way off on the Noob list.... it was in the gear critic. I ended up getting a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W120; it takes fantastic photos and is very easy to use, but I find it way too fragile for the outdoors. I have to be very aware of where it is all the time to make sure I don't bounce it off rocks. It is now in a tupperware case to protect it.
 -
If you look back through The Noob postings, I asked the same question and got some good responses. It is probably 2-4 pages back, I asked around March.

Oh hell yeah. Techno is on my playlist. Gotta love Oakenfold and DJ Tiesto.

Trip: Diamond Peak + Mt. Yoran, OR - Date: 7/28/2008 Trip Report: Rocky.joe and I went up to check out Mt. Yoran and DIamond Peak over the weekend. Mt. Yoran is the peak just to the north of Diamond Peak, and it seems to always get over looked, but looks fantastically cool from a distance. After doing some running around getting bug spray (well needed!) and a forest pass, we were on the trail by 830am or so. Made quick time of the 5 miles to the base of Yoran, and stashed our packs. The scramble up Yoran is fairly straight forward. You ascend the gully on the SW side of the mountain, then cross into the SE gully to finish it off. Solid class 4 scrambling with the potential for low class 5 moves. Don't bother bringing ropes and gear as I didn't see any cracks in the rock. Once back down, we climbed up to the base of the ridge that leads away from Yoran and scrambled to the top of that. We latter found out that there is a very easy trail on the back side of that ridge. The way we went up, was straight at the thing, from the trail side. Lots of loose big rocks. Had a few 60 pounders come down on top of me, and as you can imagine diving out of the way of a 60lb rock is not very fun. We then proceeded to go up the North ridge of Diamond Peak. We managed to get right up to the very top of the ridge, where it starts to cliff out at a false summit. By this time it was 5 or 6pm, we couldn't see much because of the clouds and all of the rock crumbled away with the slightest touch. (Some of the worst rock ever!) Found a nice place to bivy, watched a fantastic sunset, saw every single star in the sky, and a beautiful sunrise. On the hike out we saw 2 sets of very fresh bear tracks, but never saw any bears. Back at the car before noon. Photos here. Gear Notes: Cold Beer! An axe might have been nice for the snow section that we backed off on. Approach Notes: Trail Head off of road #23, snow still on trail but otherwise very fast hiking.
