Per the guidebook you can hike up to this area. I'm pretty sure I was at the K cliff, but when I went up the gully that I think was in between the K cliff and the Lip it looked sketchy. I'm not sure if this is because it's early in the season and the approach isn't semi-cleared, or I was in the wrong place. We didn't want to get into the wrong area and send down rocks. Can anyone offer some directions? Maybe getting there is easier via GNS.

Exactly. I've been combing through the Sky Valley book looking for good climbs, but thought it would be helpful to get some ideas, so I don't spend time wandering from area to area only to find dirty unfriendly routes. I've cruised around the GNS and parts of the lower wall, and want to venture to other areas to increase the amount of climbs that I might actually get up.

So, There may be threads on this already, but I'm either too lazy to search, or was unable to find after extensive searching - you decide. What are some good 5.9s and low 5.10s for the beginning trad leader (good pro, no crazy runouts)- besides the obvious climbs from the recent index weekend thread. Thanks for any input.

about 100' further uphill and just climber's left. Look for obvious weekness. I think there's a little tree below some 3rd/4th class that makes a good starting point.

Just so I can feel worse, how crowded was Index on Sunday? I made the mistake of going to X38. Like Rad said, it was packed. People kicking rocks down on other crags, and one dude tried to claim a route for toproping that he wasn't even planning on climbing right away. WTF!

If you end up going to Castle Rock you might as well jump on some 8s there as well. Catapult link to Canary or SF Jello Tower/Midway Direct will be good for you. Super good protection!

Bug - that story is tough! I saw a mother and 3 cubs by Waptus Lake. We had turned a corner on the trail out into a clearing. We were about 25' or so away from the bears, and the bears saw us at the same time we saw them. They ran to the nearest tree about 20' away, the cubs climbed to the very top, and the mother stood behind the tree. We backed up a little but still in sight of the mother, and she started with the gruffing, so we backed up until she couldn't see us anymore. We started talking loudly so they could still hear us. We didn't want to bushwack, so we waited for about 30 min. for the bears to get the courage to take off. Saw the same crew about 100 yards further down the trail. Cubs went running, we backed up again, and waited again.
