  1. At the risk of repeating what was said, my climbinbg oriented setup is the light Dynafit boots (TLT4), Dynafit bindings and Atomic TM22's. I've climbed a couple of routes last year on Hood (Leuthold and Reid Headwall) just fine in the boots. I think those boots are lighter than Scarpa Alphas. However, due to the higher cuff, they offer less ankle flexibility. I don't like this setup for a day of backcountry skiing because the boots are pretty soft and I use different boots and skis for this But as an approach\descent this is this setup is great. -r

    Caption?

I think the rope is meerly dental floss for the Polar Bear once he's done munching dinner. -r
  3. I love when web sites get their content mixed up. I am looking at the MountainGear site and they have a picture of BD Raptors there (as opposed to the Rotor Swivel) -r
  4. The sign said something to the effect of "Closed. No uphill travel allowed. Subject to $500.00 fine". Iain, we saw one lone car at at the trailhead to TDH around 7-7:30 AM Friday. Was that you? More snow on the way. Why do I have to work? -r
  5. According to the report the victim was skiing with a partner whom was unharmed. The news had little detail. -r
  6. Some please post KKK porn to stengthen their case. -r
  7. Trip: Mt Hood - Newton Creek Drainage Date: 2/23/2007 Trip Report: Face Shots all day long. Frank (fheimerd) and I had an absolutely spectacular day sking the Newton Creek Drainage today (2-23). The short story was face shots all day. We left Portland around 6:15AM and were skinning by 8. The "easy" route up Heather Canyon had a foreboding sign warning of large fines and revokation of cc.com logins if we made uphill travel on the cat track, so we worked up through the trees to Pea Gravel Ridge. We took one quick run off the low part of the ridge, which only got us hungry for more. We worked up the ridge to more commonly skied area, and did some snow stability tests. The first run was amazing. I also managed a sweet face plant and decided to lock my boots in the less forward position the rest of the day We were rewarded run after run with some of the best snow I've seen on Mt Hood. The powder was about 2+ feet on average. Breaking trail was obviously a chore, but a labor of love. All in all we worked up and down the ridge making numerous runs. Came down through Jill's Woods to the cat track. The windward side of the ridge was pretty windloaded. We were back to the car around 4PM with a full day of skiing under our belts. The unfortunate news is that it was windy and the wind shifted directions, creating more wind loading of the snow, so we saw less desirable avy conditions as the day progressed (word of caution to anyone heading up there this weekend). I am beat tonight, and Frank is driving to the Wallowas. Today was definatly a stellar ski day! My camera got little use today. There was too much powder and fun! Sorry. -r Gear Notes: Skis, poles, skins, shovel, probe, beacon... the usual shit. Approach Notes: Note the MHM signage.
  8. That picture is back from the olden days when dogs were not media icons on the mountain, non-climbing co-workers didn't pester you about an MLU, and the Pearly Gates was the easiest way to the top of Hood. -r
  9. I want some of those translucent boots. -r
  10. The same shit happens wiht cycling and other endeavors. I was once riding my bike and some asshole shouted out the window "Pay your taxes". WTF? Anyhow, vote early and vote often. -r
  11. Maybe the fire department can do a quick credit check prior to dragging people out of burning buildings. -r
  12. I usually rely on my heating vents to dry my shoes (daily bike commuter too). However, when there are multiple footwear days, it gets to be tight or creative in terms of what gets dry. This looks pretty nice. -r

    Dog on Hood

I hope all you guys show up at the Cheerful Tortise tonight. -r
  15. Yeah I worked from home to day. I think the large black hole of time where I was skiing and not sending out testy emails was pretty conspicuous -r

    Dog on Hood

My dog has an MLU, Avy Beacon and cell phone, just in case. He's ok on the extraction part of avy rescue, but sucks with the probe. -r
  17. My personal experience was that I decided that Makalu's were the right boot for my first boot. They are great, but a couple of colder weather early spring climbs on Hood and I was in the market again. If La Spotiva fits you well (read the great advice on finding a good shop), then I'd consider some of the next step up boots from La Spotiva. The new Nepal Evo's weigh only 4 oz more, and they seem to have this new Trango Extreme Evo Light which is both light (3 lbs) and insulated. Also for lots of summer slogging in the snow, Gore-Tex lining is really pretty nice. -r
  18. Chad, Think PJ sale at Mtn Shop. You cannot afford NOT to get a board. It was pretty sweet up there today. Might have to come down with some mysterious ailment for the rest of the week. -r EDITED: DOH! I re-read this on a resonable screen and see you already have a board. I knew this since you told me that last year. Double DOH!
  19. Just got back From Mt Hood. There was about 7 or so inches of fresh between 4K and 6K. The 50+ mph winds above the timberline were reason to stay in the trees. More snow is coming! -r
  20. Here's another vote for the Cannon SD line. I have lots of good shots with it. In bring sun on snow, the viewfinder\LCD as opposed to LCD only is a godsend. Ditto on a device to keep it on your person and not sliding down a glacier into a crevasse. I learned that the hard way -r
  21. The NorthWest Avalance Center site has some good info on weather and snowpack all over the PNW, including Mt Hood. www.nwac.us -r

6666 is the sign of the marmot. -r
  23. All praise King Marmot
  24. Here come the "Brokeback Interweb" jokes. -r
  25. Mammut makes a Phoenix (1/2 rope) in 30mx8mm. I'd recommend it over either one. -r
