Not so surprised about the looting. Those people are desperate. The looting for things like jewelry and the shootings are strange. Almost like watching Lord of the Flies or something. The dismantling of society seems to happen pretty quickly. Makes you wonder how quickly your town could fall apart after something like this. I do wonder what all of those stranded in town felt about the flooding threat. Were they for the most part aware of the danger, or do they not actually realize the potential for this to happen? Did they recognize the risk but could not leave, or did they choose to stay? You shouldn't have to be a hazard analysis expert when determining where to live, so surely some responsiblity rests on the city to warn residents of this possibility. Though it is also a tragedy that people are so disconnected with nature that they would require a government warning about these risks.

The Netherlands get storms too, but nothing like the reliable storms the Gulf receives EVERY year. It's just sad because over the past years, every hurricane season, you always hear "wow, that was close, it's a good thing it didn't hit new orleans, THAT would be a catastrophe".

Since they are all seeking refuge in the Superdome (and now the Astrodome!?) I propose building a giant dome in the same place, and then rebuilding the city inside it.

Perhaps, living in SF you are looking for trouble, but at least there is not an annual certainty that a major event will either brush the outskirts of the town, or wipe it out completely. If you consider Seattle or Portland, there is no question that at some point in the future, there will be a major, devastating natural event that will destroy much of the town with tremendous consequences. Whether it is a major earthquake, or lahar, it's inevitable based on the strata underneath. Yet the timescale on such an event is so large, that it seems more acceptable to live in these areas.

A couple miles inland. New Orleans is such a unique town with a lot of history, culture, and overall coolness, but it makes zero sense to try to maintain an urban metropolis on a shifting river delta, part of which is below sea level. It's insanity at face value. Now that they are required to make these decisions I hope it does not involve rebuilding in locations that are asking for trouble.
-
It's just unfair to rebuild in the same area and invite a fairly poor population core back in, claiming it's safe again, when really it is not. Creating an elaborate pump system to keep back the sea just to because people want to live "right there" is ludicrous.
-
Earthquakes maybe, in California. But natural disasters that occur on 1000 - million year cycles really don't compare to living below sea level, on the coast, in an area that has devastating storms on a predictable annual basis. This was an inevitable situation, predicted by many. To rebuild everyone's homes in exactly the same place as some sort of act of defiance is just stupid.
-
and they f'ing rebuild in the exact same place again. I'm willing to have my taxes pay to help these people but NOT to rebuild in the same damn place with the attitude of we'll show nature who's in charge.

A bio advisor once mused that the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics is way more terrifying than any threat of nuclear war.

have they drained the lake or something? Imagine the piles of starbucks memorabilia. Where is this railroad cut exactly? -
You state this as if it were fact. I think a "seem to be" needs to be added. I just think you need to tax the hell out of SUVs. Money talks. Either at the car dealership, or make gas $5/gallon at least for non-commercial purposes. People will always speed, it's next to unenforceable. Some people consider speeding tickets the price of the luxury to speed.

While the idea is great as compromise legislation that could be passed into law, it would be interesting to see if it was actually enforced on the road. It's interesting to note that many SUV's are already breaking the law due to excess curb weight in some city neighborhoods. I do see a lot of used SUV's for sale around town these days.

I am a pretty hardcore biker/commuter and I am so, so happy bikes are not allowed in wilderness areas. Keep 'em out.
