Another rescue in Denali. This time the guy started a fire to get noticed... he had fractured his arm an lower spine -- and had walked 10 miles hoping for self rescue when he resorted to setting the fire in the hopes of getting noticed. http://aprn.org/2009/09/15/canadian-rescued-in-denali/

I'm a web developer & have a MacBook Pro 17". I run all my Adobe apps in OSX and simultaneously run Parallels / Windows XP running Windows Personal Web Server & CF Development Server / MySQL. I code in Dreamweaver - but since I always host on Windows platforms all my files are on the XP partition so I can replicate the hosting environment. It takes a while to get everything running first thing in the morning but once it's up it's a good setup. If I was only a programmer it would make no sense to have a Mac, but I also do a lot of design and work on my photography quite a bit -- so having a Mac makes more sense for me. I ran a PC for years before making the switch and while it was expensive to upgrade all my software from Windows to OSX the switch was well worth it -- and the Mac version of Photoshop is a dream to work with. Likewise Aperture is an amazing program.

Fun!! That's a classic route. If you traverse right when you encounter funky black rock you will find slightly harder climbing -- but better quality rock.

Awesome!!!! Way to dial in the weather!!! -
Look up Stan Justice in FBX. He's very active in the Alpine Club; he's been to the area and can hook you up with more information.

Awesome!! All of those routes are classic lines!!! I have this great memory of Stone: we were tying in at the base of a route when this redneck with a bulging gut walks up next to us and drops his pack. In a thick southern drawl he said, "I love climbing slab because I can climb it with a beer belly." He then proceeded to float up run-out 5.9.

I have a WM down vest -- but I found that I sweat too much while wearing it & as a result it was getting wet and not drying out. I have a big down jacket I'll throw over everything if I'm really cold (but i don't carry it unless it's below 10). My wife climbs in a synthetic vest & really likes it.

This is usually an IE bug; to get around it right click & open the searched pages in a new window & you won't have to deal with the expired page setting. I think google is a better search & I've actually stopped setting up searches for clients b/c google always does it better. Google has some fast servers & searches the entire domain so you can find all sorts of things... i.e. a search for "sobos wife site:cascadeclimbers.com" brings up photos! The only drawback is that new content doesn't get added to google's cache for something like 24 hours.

Thanks! Kevbone -- can I drive up the BLM road in a rental car (w/o destroying it)?

Headed to the City for a few days of climbing. I've never been there; should I reserve a campsite in advance - and if so, what campground area(s) are recommended?

industrial grade sewing machine for camalot slings
wfinley replied to markwebster's topic in The Gear Critic
A friend of mine bought an industrial sewing machine off CraigsList. He was able to set up a couple hours with the person who sold it who walked him through the basics. I can't recommend any brands though... -

I have a Pentax Option W10 (an older model); it takes great photos in bright light and can get wet (which is a bonus for rafting); however it sucks in low light and the images come out blured. I recently upgraded to a Canon SD880 which I'm liking (although it took some tweaking to get colors figured out correctly). The image stabilization is a great plus. I've tried the video - but I'm not much of a video person so I can't say if it's good or not. For example shots with the Pentax look at this page. All the climbing shots with the Pentax (landscape / zooms were with an SLR). For example with the Canon look here and here (in the latter many of the landscapes are with an SLR). Ken Rockwell's review of the Canon is here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

Anyone know the Christian group at WY Cirque 8/09?
wfinley replied to wfinley's topic in Climber's Board
Waiting a year before posting a message in the off hopes that someone who knows them may read the message does not make me "quick to judge". Thanks for the link; I'll shoot them an email. -
I've been holding this in for a while... almost a year in fact. I finally gave up hope last week thus I'm penning a request for help in tracking down this group. Last year I went to the Cirque of Towers and did some awesome climbing. We were there for close to a week --- and on the last day a party came in and set up camp near us. They were a group of climbers who were just off some tour - Climbers for Christ (or something similar) and were in for a week of cragging before heading back home. The group was very friendly and as we were leaving one of the guys came over and explained to me that he had left his rain jacket & pants in the car and wondered if he could borrow mine and mail it back to me. I was happy to lend him my jacket / pants -- knowing that the 20 miles hike back to the car would suck and also knowing that they would encounter rain on the routes. I gave him the jacket / pants (Marmot Precip and fairly new) along with my address. Anyways.... as you can guess. I never got my jacket and pants back -- and I had to shell out $200 to replace them. Maybe the guy lost my address... maybe he lost the jacket - I don't know. So if anyone knows a Christian group who went into the Cirque last year please tell them to get in touch. There were 4 people and they were from either Philly or Pittsburgh and included a bald guy, a woman with long brown hair -- and a guy in his late 20s with long red hair (he's the one who took my jacket). Thanks for reading.

"Accidents in North American Mountaineering 2007"
wfinley replied to Zeta Male's topic in Climber's Board
Agreed. Anyone who mountain climbs has made questionable judgment calls. I once bivied in a crevasse at 13,000' when the day that dawned clear and cold turned into a hurricane nightmare. We were lucky - the storm only lasted 12 hours -- had it lasted longer we would have been screwed. -
given that I've been climbing in the AK range for over a decade a more fitting description might be "last hurrah for aging alpinist". Who is this Polish guy and where can I find him?
