Was it about 4 miles or so past Lena Lake trailhead? You probably found Black Wall which is described in the new guidebook. Edge of Space, 6 clips plus pro to 3 inches 5.8. Knobs End 5.9 thin crack. Rampa Dampa Ding Dong 5.5 gear to 1.5". To the right of Black Wall is Lily Wall which has a 5.7 route, Hummingbird Liberation (6 clips). There's more in the area, pick up the book for descriptions.

Fishing at Alta Lake, Golfing in Winthrop. No climbing. The kids have been at Grandma's house for the last 3 weeks, so we have to go over there and pick them up before school starts back up on Tuesday.

Fixed it for you.

Totally staged. Was that supposed to be a security camera following the action back and forth? So do the 7-11's have Vegas style monitored cameras now? Abu sitting in the back room saying 'pan over to the right, Danny, I think this guy might be trouble'.

I don't personally use a gun for home defense (mine stay in a gun safe in the garage) but if I was going to keep one for actual self defense, and if I had no training, and if I actually believed I didn't need training there would be only one choice for me. A double action revolver. I have an older S&W Mod. 19 .357 mag that would do the job nicely. Shotguns will work, but they're somewhat unwieldy in the close quarters of a home. They also require cocking between each shot. I believe that if you are in a high stress situation that you will do exactly as you've trained to do under high stress conditions. I'd be concerned with a shotgun that you haven't trained under stress, and you may very well forget to pump a round into the chamber. Also, the spray of buckshot (or whatever load) means that anyone close to an attacker is going to get shot if you pull the trigger. With a double action revolver, all you do is point and shoot. No need to cock, almost nothing to break. Semi auto pistols are nice, but their not for someone looking for a simple solution with no training. My $.02

I see, you think I meant equivalent in terms of the amount of money going to the state for wildlife management. But, I meant equivalent in absolute terms. Hunting stuff costs many times what licenses cost. I don't know what the tax rate is, but since the gear costs so much, you can see how the tax could add up quickly.

In that case, you'll have to remember that I'm Dutch and listen to what I mean, not what I say!

That's not what I said.

Have you priced a decent rifle scope lately? It's pretty easy to drop $1,200 or so, if you don't get a Bushnell from Walmart. Edit: actually I just double checked the license fees and they're a bit higher than I remembered. Anyway, rifle and scope totaled just over $2k.

WTF Porter. That deer has a bigger rack than that puny moose on the other pic!

It's not just hunting fees. Look up the Pittman-Robertson Act. Every time you buy hunting "stuff" a tax has been levied at the manufacturers level. The money collected goes back to the states to manage hunting and wildlife. The cost of my rifle and scope is equivalent to about 80 years of hunting licenses, so you can see how this might add up.

Mmmm, venison. I just sat with my 10 year old through his hunter safety course. He's pretty excited about the upcoming Fall. We don't eat a lot of beef, but we we usually get a deer every year, and my father in law slaughters 1 steer every year from their little farm (grass fed of course) and we get some of that. Actually the last one committed suicide as far as we can tell. Stupid fucking cows. Their water trough is an old bath tub, and the dumb ass swallowed and choked on the stopper. I'm a little worried that eating those steaks will lower the kid's IQ points a bit...

I don't know what ggk is, but I do know good chemistry when I taste it. And I promise you it is not found in a douche bag.

I chaperoned at a field trip recently for my 10 year old son. He's in 4th grade, and we all had to ride the bus about an hour each way from Port Townsend to Keyport. On the bus there was a girl who kept telling my son what she was going to be doing. "Joel, I'm going to take a nap now", "Joel, we're playing bus bingo", "Joel, I'm...." you get the picture. So on the way home I asked what the story was. Oh, she likes me he says. Now a month later he's spent several evening hanging out with her, watching her softball practice etc. My 10 year old son. Damn, I'm getting old. Anyway, I seem to remember that field trips were a close second to summer camp for falling into puppy love. But now I'm kind of wondering what my own parents were thinking of us when THEY were chaperoning.

As a kid in northern Michigan we used to go to Sleeping Bear Dunes every year for a day in the spring. Looking back, I think it's amazing that you could fill up an entire day with a hundred kids just climbing up and down on sand dunes. No lectures, no instruction, no history...I could learn more about those dunes from Google in 30 seconds than they ever told us in half a dozen field trips there.

Stairmaster elevation estimates?
Macson replied to OlympicMtnBoy's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
Is it better to use a stairmaster, or use a treadmill with a 15% incline? -

Is the Delorme software as detailed as a 7.5' map? I know most Greentrails maps are based on 15' maps and just aren't detailed enough for accurate off-trail navigation. I usually print out a 7.5' map of my destination with waypoints and routes from Topo and carry a 7.5' quad to be able to see the bigger picture. Have to admit though that those quads usually stay folded in the pack, while the printouts get looked at over and over.
