  1. I replaced my etrex venture with the foretrex 201 last year, and I really like it a lot. The rechargable battery lasts about 15 hours of continuous use, and doesn't seem to be affected by cold. That said, I would like to have to option of being able to replace batteries in the field....so when I bought one for my brother in law for a graduation gift I got him the 101. Use lithium AA's in it and never worry about the cold.
  2. I'm at the office and don't have it with me but the new guidebook lists a couple dozen trad routes. Mostly moderate single pitch stuff. Still, it's close and fairly dry so it works for me. There are trad lines on the summit wall, powerline wall and snag buttress among others.
  3. It looks like it might be nice out Sunday. Anyone interested in some moderate trad cragging at Erie? I'd like to go up there around noon or 1:00.

    Favorite Pie?

My Grandma's apple betty. 4 ingredients....rome apples, orange juice, butter, white sugar. served warm with whipped cream.
  6. Ok, it's a little early I guess, but I'll be heading over to the Methow Valley over the Christmas weekend....leaving Thursday after work. Up for whatever Friday or Saturday. Tentative plan is to do some snowshoeing Friday and saturday, but that could change if something more interesting is in and I have a partner. My ice experience is limited, but if someone with a little more experience is going to be in the area we can discuss the possibilities. Will also be skiing at the Loup Monday, but I'll be taking turns ruining my gloves on the rope tow with my 5yo. So far it looks like it'll be a fun long weekend, anyway.

    Men over X

Actually, I have no idea what this thread is about. It's way too long to read. Are there any Cliff's notes?

salad days, noun: A time of youthful inexperience, innocence, or indiscretion. Those were his salad days, and he thought they might last forever. --David Gergen, " 'They Love You. Watch Out,' " New York Times, February 2, 1997 Salad days was coined by Shakespeare in Antony and Cleopatra: "My salad days,/ When I was green in judgment, cold in blood."

    Joining Rope

I'm pretty sure a sheet bend is the standard knot for joining ropes of different diameter (in sailing). In your top picture the skinnier rope would be the one coming from the right.

    commuting

In college I commuted from Kingston to UW via ferry and bus. About 1 1/2 hours each way. When I graduated my first job was in Bellevue, so Kingston to Bellevue via ferry and car. I left a car parked in Edmonds. About 1 1/2 hours to work, and 2 1/2 hours home....longer once they stopped letting us cut through Clyde Hill, so I always missed the 6:30 ferry. After 2 years, I had to call that quits.
  12. I didn't see anything about working....do you need a town where you can get a specific type of job? Or can you telecommute? Or are you independently wealthy, or fine with being poor? If I had the option, I'd probably live in Mazama, Winthrop or Twisp in that order. Anywhere in the upper Methow Valley is pretty much hippy town. My inlaws live in the lower valley, and are pretty conservative. They get a little annoyed with the folks up there...but I like it. If Eastern WA isn't a "must" then my town, Port Townsend, is hippyville for sure, and it's in the rain shadow so way more sunny days than Seattle.
  13. My advice, which I'll give to you all for free because I like you, is.....don't do that.
  14. No, the second letter is either iNtuitive or Sensing.
  15. INTJ after the military and before college. At that time, I think they said it's not supposed to change over time. Then at my second job after college I took it again....INTP.
  16. Ok, probably not the best thread to ask this, but on that page in the artical about Layton & Eric's climb they say: "The route is called The Devil’s Club and graded V+ 5.9+ A2-. As in the Canadian Rockies, the free rating should be taken with a grain of salt." What the hell does that mean? Do they mean it's really harder than 5.9+, or really easier? Is there some sort of sandbag bias in pacific northwest ratings? I'm confused.
  17. Is it still racist if it's statistically correct? So, basically, nobody can say anything about the crime rate of any minority racial group because saying it (even if it's true) would be racist?
  18. I'll be in the valley this weekend. Fishing Saturday, but could get out Sunday. PM if interested in Mazama or WA Pass. Can trad lead 5.6. Sport lead 5.8. Follow harder. Have rack, rope.
  19. Maybe it's 37 celsius. Just kidding. I was looking at the 800 yesterday in a local store. They've got their bags on sale 20% off, which makes that bag really cheap for down. I saw the 3 tier rating system you're talking about. I think it was 42, 32, 4 for the 800. Maybe the website is taking an average. My guess is the high number is supposed to be the naked under the stars rating, the middle is the long johns in a tent rating and the last is the "you'll wish you were dead, but won't be" rating. Anyway, I'm planning to get one today for my wife who only backpacks in the summer. She'll use it this weekend and maybe I'll update this post with a review.
  20. Does a 5.11 climber putting up a 5.8 route with deathfall runouts make for a contrived climb? I mean, if you don't really want a 5.8 route then why put it up? Why make it artificially hard/dangerous? And then you're suprised and offended when it gets changed?
  21. I don't know how Whidbey or anyone else for that matter approaches an REI purchase, but I know for me that I go in there with the attitude that the sales staff doesn't know shit, and I ignore pretty much everything they say. If I was there to buy plastics and the sales guy tried to tell me what they were and were not good for I would either tune him out, or tell him to just get me the friggen boots. I've returned stuff when it didn't stand up the way I thought it should. A backpack when the stays ripped out of the bottom, an LED headlamp when one of the bulbs burned out (the ones that are supposed to last 10,000 hours). But I would never return an item because I chose the wrong thing. And I certainly would never blame the sales staff...who I wouldn't have listened to even if they did try to steer me away from a purchase. By the way, if you're getting 10% back you're not paying full retail.

    Training?

I think you can learn a lot of good information from individuals on this site. Post in climbing partners and hook up with someone. Check the things they tell you against what you've read and take it slow.
