And.... this would have resulted in saving the 3 climbers how exactly? When are the most newbs on the mountain, winter or summer? Whats the logic for picking on climbers anyway? Maybe we all should have locator chips imbedded in our bodies as well as our DNA profiles on tap with the feds. If the Access Fund was worth anything beyond "keeping bolted sport crags open for climbing" they would be all over this. We should all flood the OR State legislature with opposition or its only the first step to this: -- Re Mt Katahdin "17. CLIMBING OR MOUNTAIN HIKING: Climbing or mountain hiking may be restricted at the discretion of the Director. Park users must be reasonably prepared and equipped, and must take reasonable precautions against endangering themselves or others. Hikers must wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and must carry a working flashlight. No children under the age of 6 years are allowed above timberline..." -- 1-You must carry a windchill chart, however, you are not required to carry anything that measures the wind. (what's the point? who knows?) 2-Minimum 4 persons per party required. Groups with less will not be permitted to stay overnight in Baxter State Park. They recommend you plan for 6 members in case one or two people back out. 3-Trip itinerary, climbing resume, listing the leader and 2 assistant co-leaders, and certification that you and your party are fit to climb is required. 4-Mountain is closed down by rangers if the windchill reaches -50 degrees F. or standing temp reaches -30 degrees F. 5-Rangers will physically go over your gear and if they feel it is not appropriate, you will not be allowed to climb. 6-All winter campers going to Chimney Pond will be required to stay at Roaring Brook Campground the first night. (although it's 12 miles of hiking to reach Roaring Brook, you probably are going to want to do this anyway) 7-All parties shall be on trail in time to get to their camping areas before dark. 8-Climbing parties must have at least 2 persons on a team. Solo climbs are NOT permitted. All persons will register with the Ranger/Park Volunteer at Chimney Pond before any climb/hike. All technical climbers must leave Chimney Pond by 8 am on the day of the technical climb. All winter climbers utilizing known trails to climb Mt. Katahdin must leave Chimney Pond by 9 am. Flashlight or headlamp is required for technical climbing. 9-All Katahdin climbing parties are expected to return to Chimney Pond by 8 pm. After 8 pm, search and rescue procedures may be initiated. Negligent parties may be held responsible for the costs of search and rescue efforts. (curfew time!?!?) 10-The leader of each winter party must request a special use permit a minimum of 2 weeks in advance form the Park Director by writing the reservation clerk at Park Headquarters in Millinocket, Maine. (four weeks is recommended for processing time to avoid time conflicts with other parties). (they are very slow, allow at least 2 months) Irving C Caverly, Jr Director, Baxter State Park http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150219/katahdin.html -- This may be where our "sport" is headed, unfortunately, this is where our society is headed too.

I have chronic knee pain as well mostly in my left knee - smacked a fire hydrant when I was 12yo and it swelled to the size of a football, never been quite the same (Im 45 yo). Its a pain pretty much right on/in/over my knee cap, and pressing up on that one leg is difficult (weak and painful) at best. Descents (walking straight down hill) are the where the pain really begins though. The following is what has worked for *me* but I don't know for sure the extent of any tissue/bone damage that may be present. What I do to help the thing along is.. Cross train - My belief is that without surgery I need to strengthen any and all muscles around the knee to help stabilized it and make up for what ever may be damaged you might say. Spread the stress and avoid imbalances. ~ Elliptical trainer - mimics cross country skiing/snowshoeing. ~ Incline treadmill - walking and running up hill. ~ Cycling - recumbent and or traditional biking. ~ Sitting Leg Press - Machine says body weight + 10% x 3 sets ~ Supported Knee Dips (aka lunges) - The key here is "supported". Its hard to describe this one but I use a piece of equipment at the gym to support me via arms while I do the lunges. This works the intended muscles and puts the knee thru the range of motion you need for climbing and descents. Can be painful at first. ~ Stretching - lots of dynamic and balanced stretching of hams and quads etc.. ~ Hill climbing - trail hiking in the mountains once a week. ~ R-I-C-E and massage - when needed. ~ Knee Brace - occasionally I'll use one for descents or when jogging but only when Im feeling some pain in it and I still feel like training. Avoid Leg Extensions IMO (or modify them) - I used to do these and "leg/hamstring curls" as well but found the pain increasing over time mostly from the extensions, not so much from the curls. What I do instead is to reverse the elliptical trainer which then works the front "quads" for 5-10 minutes a session. I also systematically flex the quad muscles when I am on the inclined sit-up bench - again this works the muscle without the stress on the knee joint.

Back in the day, before everyone got all paranoid and shit, a 20 yr old marrying a 15 yo wasn't a big deal - today its a crime and he would be tagged as a sexual predator and be outcast the rest of his life.

Sticking a pen in the cats eye is bad ass. Not sure how you can be "careful" though, if they're hunting you you porbly wont known it until.. Id bring my Kbar but the thing weighs too much.
-
Don't think Id be trusting the engineering skills of those hill billies on the ATV, looks like some pretty high forces being applied there. Over all though, I feel its degrading to women - she should have been in a Bikini.

[TR] Mount Washington - Route 4 (sort of) 1/20/2007
dmuja replied to suge's topic in Olympic Peninsula
That looks fun. I havn't climbed in the Olympics yet but I hope to soon. -
I think they teach that as the "mounty method"
-
whatever you do you better do it quick! All that shit about a long slide coming to a graceful conclusion using skilful gymnastic moves is mostly wishful thinking, chances are your wearing crampons (snag) and tumbling helplessly down as you black out doing cartwheels until you stop, wake up and notice one of your legs has a new joint in it.

Gustavs sucks bad. Shitty service with not enough waitrons when busy. Nothing notable about the food except it reminded me of what they used to serve in my highschool cafeteria back in the 70's. Over priced for crappy food and service. That Mexican place gave me explosive diarrhea for like 4 days after having dined there. Lovely.. I try to leave the town way behind now before dining.

PLC its been pointed out more than once why its "not a good thing" over all. You seem to be stuck on a narrow way of looking at it. I'll say it staight out, no, the end doesn't justify the means. Thats where we differ. The government/justice system is well capable of misuse and abuse, either you recognize that fact or you don't.
-
I think they should just sample people who eat a Mcdonalds, mostly low income, a lot of minorities, bound to be a higher proportion of criminals there. Yeah. PLC, its just you.

So we should target and arrest more black people then? Catching the guilty is indeed a "good" thing. But, do you think that DNA's perceived infallibility might also be that much harder for someone who is innocent to fight against? I have known cops, judges, prosectors and I don't hold them in such high esteem as you seem to. In fact, I'll take the "ethics" of about 1/3 of those behind bars over many in the injustice system any day of the week. You should re-read my comments above which already pointed out some of my (and others) objections to this.
-
Besides, why should "arrest" be the criteria for suspicion? Many people get arrested all the time who arnt guilty of anything! Should people who protest and practice civil disobedience be more suspicious than the general population? What about "minorities"? They get arrested more often then non-minorities so why should they be disproportionally suspected or singled out for DNA matching?
-
Um.. look at the dude the caught by his licking an envelope and mailing it in to the cops thinking he won a prize. Thats all they needed as I recall

planting DNA would be way easier. You can wear gloves but still leave DNA behind - god don't you watch CSI?
