Speaking of chiefs. I have a theory about how "Sealth" got to be "Seattle". Tell me what you think.
Back in the discovery days, all communication was by writing. The discoverers of the area are communicating with the Powers That Be back East. So, they are writing about this Great Chief, Sealth, and their cursive is a bit hurried. If you get out a piece of paper and try to write "Sealth" fast, you may find that the crossing of the single "t" carries into the following "l", and, if you are hurried, get lazy with the "h". Combined with the crossing of the "t", the "lazy h" makes no sense as an "h": Seatth
A lazy "h", however, can easily look like an "le" (try it), making the whole word look like : Seattle.
