A mile?, no way. Possibly by a kilometer. The point is Bree was writing a personal dramatic recollection of her time at Rainier, not an incident report. I doubt there is word for word accuracy of events, just remembering from her point of view. Trying to villianize her for what was quoted above solves nothing. It was clear that she was upset by his death. Knowing some of the climbing rangers it is somewhat disappointing that she was so critical of them. Glad I am too old to be in that story! Just take the story as it is, an intersting article written with someone elses perspective.

As a former climbing ranger, and knowing most of the folks in this story including the author, I found it a very interesting read. Having been there, it was easier to read the story objectively, and not let the conflict between strong-willed climbers annoy me. Perhaps the story will not be readily understand by the general public, but climbers and rescuers surely can identify with it. Lots of references to the gallows humor are made, and after years of dealing with dead people, I have seen it over and over again, and it will continue I'm sure. Putting your life on the line in very hazardous conditions, often without adequate pay or job security is not for everyone. These folks are the best and will carry out the rescues whenever called. No, not everyone will understand the book, but name calling and holier than thou attitudes are not the answer. If the book so offends you, just be glad you never had to do that type of work.

yah, common sense is not common. And grandpa strolling through the woods with a rifle looking for a little venison does not exist anymore either. The 9 day modern rifle deer season is a bit hairy to say the least anymore. I sometimes do wear hunter orange during that time of year to give myself an extra edge. But hunting seasons for some kind of critter occur almost all year. Predator hunting for coyote and cougar can be anytime. Bird hunting, bear hunting, deer hunting, elk hunting, even snaffle_mouse hunting. So, although I do take precautions, I do have to agree with fairweather. Damn, I hate when that happens.

I lost all my toenails from frost nip, and the big ones never grew back well. I went to a doctor, but it was useless, they will recover on their own in a couple of weeks. My feet were fine after that. I did not use the same footwear combination again.

A year without FW, might be good for him, actually going outside for a change execpt when he's selling twinkies.

I am sure it has been climbed in winter, however the climbers guide still states there is no documented summit in winter I believe. Myself and crazy Ted did go up to the snow dome one February, but did not continue on the short way to the summit. We were able to go up during an arctic front, with several days of blue skies, no new snow, and really cold temperatures. Because of those conditions, we were able to hike the upper hoh, and snow dome with crampons, and not snow shoes. The trail above elk lake to glacier meadows was steep and icy and we had to rope up, use ice axe and crampons on the trail. The rest was ok. Had we known at the time of no documented ascent we would have toughed it out and done the summit. So... go up during an clear arctic front, and avoid all the crappy weather.

Yah, up on glacier peak the snaffles ate through a side of our tent while we were gone, and ate all our food, found a squeeze bottle of margerine, sprayed it all over the tent contents, especially my sleeping bag and zipper, then proceeded to eat my zipper to a malfunctioning mass, put on or drag a pair of my boxers, chew another side of the tent for their escape, and abandon the mess.
