I just bought a shitload of MSR Denali snowshoes. They have held up well with multiple newbie users. Plus the tails to add floatation are great, they facilitate keeping the snowshoes narrow which makes walking easy. Price is very good for what you get. Easy to carry on a pack, and the tails can be put inside if you want a lower profile.

OK, I'll bite; are you talking about Kautz creek, just inside the Nisqually entrance?

"Being white means to engage in a day in, day out struggle to prove that you are smarter than other white people. By the time they reach college, most white people are confronted with the fact that they may not be as smart as they imagined." Of course this does not include the cc.com junkie!

Trip: Just say no to grizzlies - Date: 1/17/2008 Trip Report: No grizzlies, that is in Glacier national park this time of year. OK, this may not be a trip for the hard core, but would be a fun few days for those interested. On Wednesday, myself and the female snaffle hopped a train from Spokane to West Glacier. Awakening in the early morning, we were thrown from the warm train into the winter wonderland of West Glacier. The train was already moving again as we turned around, with a comment from the conductor "we don't stop here much in the winter, good luck". Only a mile from Glacier NP gate, we skied along lake mcdonald to the avalanche picnic area, on the Going to the Sun road. Only a 12 mile ski, but great views, snow, and solitude. People don't visit here in the winter. Duck the entrance fee if possible, cause the park offers no services in the winter other than fee collection! We skied groomed xc trails at a nearby groomed area, interupted by a wild doggie skijoring race. Dogs and snaffles don't always get along, but they ignored us. Fun for the dogs mostly, especially the doggie drag race which ended in a massive tangle only 10 feet from the start with one dog gaining freedom for her solo victory lap. Third day skiing along the flathead river, up a boundary trail into the Glacier wilderness, a long day, great animal tracks and views. Hopped an evening train back to spokane after waiting for two hours outside next to the tracks in a blizzard. Snaffles are tough.

Nice list of accomplishments. However, I didn't see the ascent of Rumdoodle on your goals.

Crisler's Notch - Skyline to Queets Basin Shortcut

Sounds like you found a better route than going high over Mt Queets. I'd like to try your route. -
Crisler's Notch - Skyline to Queets Basin Shortcut

Nice to hear you got a big hike in Achy. I agree, when the visability is bad, it is best to go out the snowfinger. Our hike had perfect weather, and it was easy to be drawn on and on. When we linked the Queets basin with the Skyline trail, we ascended way up Mt Queets, going over the west shoulder. It seemed then, and it seems now that we must have gone way higher than we needed to. A lot of gain and loss of elevation, and some more difficult terrain than was desired. We followed a really nasty chute on the south side while descending. Ted did a nice summersault with his pack on, and we were concerned he would do a screamer. But everything worked out;, he still is the clumsiest person I know. I wonder if we could have contoured to the west without having to gain and lose all that elevation? I'll bet Crisler had a lower traverse. We got into a nice basin south of Mt Queets, and went up to climb Mt Meany. Then we continued into Saghalie creek basin by following a really easy contour around to the west on elk trails and open meadow land, and up to the Skyline. This was several years ago, so I don't remember landmarks, but it was quite easy leaving the upper Saghalie basin up to the trail, and we were so relieved that the route came together nicely. We did not come out at Lake Beauty, but north of it a bit. The weather was so good, we continued on to low divide, and resupplied (we worked for ONP at the time). Then continued into Martin lakes area, descended into Rustler creek, up to bretherton pass, and tried the ridge to Chimney peak. Somewhere along that ridge we came to our senses and descended into the upper Godkin creek. This was an interesting area, the creek was completely subterrainian, and did not surface for quite some time. We walked out Godkin creek to the Elwha trail and then back to Whiskey bend. What a great 10 day trip! Here is my post from last year: "I've done a traverse onto the skyline trail from the bailey range by dropping into the basins on the west of the ridge completely staying away from the elwha. From queets basin, go up the queets glacier for a while, and drop over a shoulder on the west side of mt. queets, don't need to do the summit. Then drop into the unnamed basin. We then scrambled up to climb mt. meany for a side trip and then returned to the basin. Continue contouring south, on the west side of the ridges at about 4900-5000 feet, into saghalie basin. Then ascend a gully, up to the skyline trail, just north of lake beauty a ways." -
As an upstanding member of the rodent population, I think I speak for all that less guns results in less plinking, thus healthier rodent populations.

a spokesman for Xcel Energy, said a squirrel came in contact with an overhead transformer and knocked out service to 177 customers Monday. Power was fully restored in just under an hour, and repair crews found the remains of the "unfortunate squirrel," he said. By coincidence, another squirrel got into a substation 40 miles away in Ironwood, Mich., Monday morning and caused a temporary outage that affected about 1,400 customers in Ironwood and two nearby communities. Squirrels r smokin' Hot!!!
