    Into the Wild

I think not. These guys are all highly social and highly organized. They achieve because they are highly focused and because the have learned not to let slip the tiniest detail. They are quite different than McCandless.

    Into the Wild

I've read the book and I highly recommend it. The book is not just about McCandless. It features several other examples of "searcher" types. Krakauer saw a bit of his early self in McCandless and used his Devil's Thumb solo climb as an example. I do think that there is a certain personality type that defines this sort of person. Perhaps someday they'll be able to even identify it in a PET scan. Who knows? Basically, it's a type of fixed idea that becomes so strong that the details of the steps necessary to reach the goal become irrelevant. There is a blind faith. It's like a religious fervor but not focused on another personality or guru, but rather on an internal idea.
  3. I'm an analytical chemist in the pharmaceutical industry, that is, when I work. Job market is terrible in Seattle right now.

    Giardia!?!

i work in a medical setting and the new thing seems to be that purell works better at killing germs than soap and water. i've heard this straight from a microbiologist's mouth. other opinions obviously exist. catbird? they're installing these wall mounted purell dispensers everywhere. It's pretty hard to beat a thorough hand washing with soap and warm water. Germs that form spores can be resistant to being killed by alcohol. Soap works by removing bacteria and spores, so it doesn't matter what the organism is. The antibacterial most often added to hand soap is triclosan, which is a phenolic compound. It works by a combination of specific and non-specific modes. In theory organisms can develop resistence to it, but thus far there is little evidence for this. In any case, the soap works quite well by itself.
  5. I'm reading a biography of Arlene Blum. In addition to being a climber, she was a chemist who worked with Bruce Ames on investigating the mutagenic properties of TRIS, a polybrominated compound used as a fire retardant in childrens pajamas. Well, word was put out to recall TRIS treated pajamas. Ames and Blum went and bought samples, tested them, and found out that the manufacturers had NOT pulled them off the market. So industry then substituted a new chemical based on substitution of chlorine for bromine (Fyrol). It was just as mutagenic as TRIS. Do you know where all those contaminated clothing articles went? They were sold overseas. Chemical Burns A more detailed discussion. All of this is a result of cigarettes. Cigarettes are made with nitrate added so they will continue to burn. Because of this, they tend to set sofas on fire. The need for fire retardants would be much less if it were not for cigarettes.

    Giardia!?!

You'll know you have it from the smell. Horrible greasy burps and gas. Metronidazole is the treatment. It's a drug developed long ago for gram negative infections like gangrene and other anaerobic infections. Since it is prescribed so infrequently, the bugs still haven't developed a resistence to it.
  7. That looks like Richard Keel!
  8. The example you cited above doesn't seem to be one that approaches your hypothetical cutoff point. Muscular Dystrophy is a fatal disease. When it comes to genetic treatments, the determining factor will be whether money is available for clinical trials. It's just as simple as that.
  9. Do you know for a fact that neither the Lockspot or Sloop have cider?
  10. How about the Sloop? or the Lockspot?
  11. Do you miss your birds? Let's Dance
  12. Little Johnny Jones he was a US pilot And no shrinking violet was he. He was mighty proud when World War III was declared. He wasn't scared, no siree! And this is what he said on His way to Armageddon! So long mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, So don't wait up for me. But while you swealter Down there in your shelter, You can see me, On your TV. While we're attacking frontally, watch brinkley and Huntley, Describing contrapuntally The cities we have lost. No need for you to miss a minute of the agonizing holocaust. So long Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, So don't wait up for me. Although I may roam, I'll come back to my home Although it may be A pile of debris. Remember Mommy, I'm off to kill a commie, So send me a salami and try to smile somehow. I'll look for you when the war is over, An hour and a half from now.
  13. I think I should be able to make it, considering I'll be in Ballard that day. So it was proposed, so it shall be done. I think it was Yul Brenner we're parodying here, isn't it?
  14. I believe that the SMC Shuksan is the same axe.
  15. hell, i had that very issue w/ a pretty big-name climber on this board, after driving 3 hours north too - w/o a damn word either - luckily i had brought stuff for a solo outing. you only get to do that kinda shit once. I can top that. I got stood up by someone on this board after travelling all the way to Joshua Tree. Fortunately for me, I had other friends from this board with whom to climb. Best advice I can offer is not to rely solely on PM's as the day of the climb approaches. Make sure you give each other a phone number in case you have to cancel. Lastly, if you do have to cancel, if you can find someone who can go in your stead, it could make a huge difference. I've done this before.
  16. There is a cam or something with a green sling buried deep in the crack below the roof. I didn't get a good look at it. It's probably there for good.
  17. Lord knows why the piton is there. There is a perfect Yellow Camalot placement three feet below it. Maybe it's a really old piton.
  18. And I'm sure that plate of brownies is working its magic too.
  19. I might be able to get insurance to pay for it. PM me with you office number.
  20. Damn, that's a fierce kitty. What species of wildcat is it? I wonder if Archy would approve?
  21. I've been dealing with low back pain myself. It's always stiff and sore in the morning when I get up. After an hour or so of movement, it loosens up and seems fine. It started after I'd spent a lot of time standing on a ladder installing windows and painting. This has been going on for about a month. I've been doing a lot of hard labor every day and I think maybe I just will have to take a week off for it to get better. What do you think, Mike? I have no history of herniation. The last x-ray and MRI was about five years ago and didn't show anything abnormal for someone my age. That was the last time I had a bad strain from a fall.
