  1. I think that what they mean is that without bolts the crack must be unsafe to climb. I mean those crazy widgets could pull out or break and they are heavy.
  2. Well, if an asteroid does hit Mars, it will be recorded. Opportunity knocks.

  7. The above quote gybe with what Arlo was saying in his Rock Warrior book. He advised to live in the moment and focus on what you are doing right now. Concentrate only on the moves you are making now and are about to make and not on reaching the top of the route or getting the redpoint. Your enjoyment of the climb with be enhanced, as will your ability to learn. Your performance will improve at the same time.

    HELLA!

    That's uber plab, dude!
  9. Here's the more of the quote: I don’t care at all what happens to me when I die. That’s why I have a lot of time to care about what is happening to me in the here and the now. When I walk, I want to enjoy every step I take. I want freedom and peace and joy in every step. So joy and peace and lightness are what I produce in that moment. I have inherited it and I pass it on to other people. If someone sees me walking this way and decides to walk mindfully for him or herself, then I am reborn in him or in her right away—that’s my continuation. That’s what is happening to me in the here and the now. And if I know what is happening to me in the here and the now, I don’t need to ask the question, “What will happen to me after this body disintegrates?” There is no “before” and “after,” just as there is no birth and death. We can be free of these notions in this very moment, filled with the great joyful silence of all that is. Excerpted from: This Silence is Called Great Joy, Thich Nhat Hanh, Shambhala Sun, September 2007.
  10. My climbing buddy said he needed lackey so that's how I got my current job.

  12. I think the chimps got short changed on the rewards. I think they might have preferred the beer to the cool-aid.
  13. pray I think he means "spray". As Lister used to say, "let us spray".
  14. The answer is that it depends. Some makes come quite sharp from the factory and others, not so sharp. If you are using the crampons for ice climbing they need to be quite sharp. If you are using them for just hard snow, they don't need to be razor sharp, and in fact, it would be safer for you if they were not.
  15. The fat guy or the skinny guy?
  16. Invite that guy to Pub Club. He's the kind of guy you could just sit and listen to for hours.
  17. I can vouch for the effectiveness of Tvash's electrolyte pills. I was cramping up horribly at our camp at Colchuck Lake. After taking two pills I was fine in 20 minutes.
  18. not on your knees, you're not... You gonna take that from the little guy?
  19. Just to clarify for the original poster why modern ice screws are so superior to ice pitons is that, whereas pitons displace ice, ice screws remove the ice as shavings. When you try to displace ice, a nearly incompressible solid, it cracks. Screws if designed properly, cause minimal cracking.
  20. I am not a route setter.
  21. I think you can definitely do it and do it safely if you prepare yourself properly, have the right equipment and the support of other qualified climbers. How you prepare between now and the climb will determine whether it could be considered risky or just a sporty outing.
  22. We've already designed devices with which to land safely on a horizontal surface. One is called a hang glider and the another is called a para sail. The idea is to have enough lift that you land with a reasonable air speed. A wing suit is still closer to free fall than to gliding.
  23. I made some of the pads the holds are mounted on!
