  1. I remember another thread on this site that mentions the Johannesburg cabin. I believe there was a mining claim on the south flank.
  2. I'd heard that the present pronunciation of Sequim as "skwim" was because of the influx of East Coasters. It's original pronunciation was "see-kwim". Reference:Whistlepunks and Geoducks
  3. Chelle, it is hard to get potassium, IF YOU DON'T EAT FRUIT. The fact is Americans, in general, don't eat enough fruit. Instead they eat too much processed foods. Climbers tend not to bring fresh fruit on climbs because it is heavy. Not everyone brings dried fruit. The sorts of things many climbers bring on climbs are potassium poor: cheese, crackers, candy bars, etc. So yes, it is easy to get potassium, and YET, many do not get enough. Vitamin supplements that contain potassium cannot, by law, exceed 3% of the RDA. You get more potassium in an average sized apple or bannana than you do in a potassium supplement.
  4. Okay I'll go with that. Inside pinnacle right side- upper 10's jams only, but 5.10a/b with face holds. A friend and I tried the middle of the North side without horizontal seams for feet. Feels like 5.10a. Without horizontals for feet or hands, >5.10b/c?
  5. Jim and Bob were farmers. They were having coffee one morning at the diner when Jim said to Bob, "you know farming is a fine and dandy way to make a living, but it doesn't do much for the mind. I was thinking of taking some classes down at the community college." "That sounds like a great idea, Jim. Let me know how you like it. I might like to take some courses too", said Bob. Jim goes down to the local community college and speaks with the academic advisor. The man suggests that he take math, english, history and logic. "Logic? What is that all about?", asks Jim. The advisor tells him to go see the professor, which he does. The professor says, "So you want to know what Logic is all about?" "Yes, says Jim. "I don't have the slightest idea if I'll even like your class". "Well, I'll give you an example of logic in action. Do you own a weedeater?" "Why, yes, I do", says Jim. "Just from that simple piece of information, I can deduce the following: because you have a weedeater, you probably have a lawn and because you have a lawn, you probably have a house. And because you have a house, you probably have a wife. "So I can tell that just because you have a weedeater, you are heterosexual. Am I right?" "By God, you are right!", said Jim, totally amazed. He left excited and determined to take the class. When Jim met Bob for coffee, Bob was just as curious as Jim had been about logic. "It's like this", says Jim. "Bob, do you own a weedeater?" "No I don't", he said. "Well", said Jim, "according to logic, that means you must be gay."
  6. Mr. Layton knows what he is talking about.
  7. Almost any fruit, including dried fruit has lots of potassium, which is a good reason to bring it on climbing trips. It is difficult to get potassium, but ridiculously easy to get plenty of sodium.
  8. I thought that cam stops also prevent the lobes from inverting.
  9. Like Fairweather, I did the same job shortly after the Nisqually Quake. The degree of nastiness is entirely a function of whether one can sit up or not. Fortunately, I could in this case.
  10. You have got to be out of your cotton-picking mind! The weapon of choice IS important. Go tell the mothers of all those dead children. Get a clue.
  11. Wow. Glad you got out all right, despite stumbling around in the dark. I might have bivied had I been in your shoes, but I realize the the prospect of a chilly bivy can be pretty bleak, if you can keep moving.
  12. For some people, the hardest part of the climb is the getting out of bed part.
  13. Yes, I saw it right after I posted here. This thread has by far the more descriptive Subject Line.
  14. Inside corner of Pinnacle at Marymoor Rock, 5.10a (fist jams and stemming). Right inside, 5.10b (fist jams and some face holds). It may be actually easier. Anyone?
  15. This could have been a tip of to what he was getting himself into. He should have got the prenup agreement. Where prenups very common in 1978?
  16. Factual information? Nobody's interested in facts! We want drama, alarmist rhetoric.
  17. There has got to be an amusing story somewhere waiting to be told.
  18. That is pretty damn callous and totally over the line.
  19. That is strange, I have never experienced that. I wonder what type of carabiner you are using. I've found that the wide rounded ones work way better.
  20. Anyone want to try this again? It will have been two weeks. If we asked really nicely, I'd bet we could get some pretty women to show up. The ladies say they'll come if lots of people come. What do you say, ladies?
  21. This is a time when it is tough to be a political dissenter.
  22. You are right. That IS a bomb- disposal suit! My bad.
  23. Ironic, indeed.
