It seems to me to be the right tack which the Obama admin is taking...ie, lets not do this, while leaving some wiggle room for an emergency. I wouldn't want another incident where Shiek Mohammeds computer gets picked up, and instead of saying that the US gov't needs a court order to review the files (like the Janet Reno blame game in this very instance), the password gets immediately forced out of the dickhead foreign combatant and the plans for 9/11 are layed bare and over 3,000 innocent lives get spared. There's lots of potential for those kinds of incidents and scenarios in the future: so why be dumb and totally ban something which should not be routinely utilized (like it has been), but which should be kept as a very rare backup in extra-ordinary and ulta-extreme highly-critical emergency situations? Say something like this scenario: you know a nuclear weapon has been smuggled into the city which you are living in, and you have captured one of the asswipes responsible and dude isn't talkin'? Are you going to keep saying "please tell us" and just let 2 million innocents die or do you man up and spin the crank ?

If they mis-drilled the hole to an incorrect size then they most likely wouldn't or couldn't tighten. So they got left as is and used, but probably not fallen on, and when the visiting climbers went home to Slovenia (if it was them).....forgotten, instead of fixed.

This issue will present a quandary for the current administration: ie, if waterboarding is torture than do you prosecute the war criminals or not? Does the rule of law trump all? Do you prosecute Bush, Cheney and if so, how far down the line to you go? Do you round up the Staff Sergeant who was pouring water on a prisoner? Please don't take this as criticism or another ad-hominum attack because I don't mean it to be, but in reading this one (which I'm not kidding, I think is very very good) it struck me that what you often link to support one of your rants is another rant form another person that is also equally unsupported. In this case, I had an old buddy who had lived with me back in the day who had been an officer in Vietnam in Army Intelligence. They were commonly doing psych-ops and very similar "Non-torture" things to captured Viet Cong (or anyone that got picked up in the dragnet) back then so I know for a fact that your linked story is spot on the truth.

They need to measure the holes to see if the Slovenians drilled with an incorrect sized drill. Sucks that dude died on it. I've know people around here that bought 10mm bolts thinking they were 3/8". I don't know anyone who miss installed them that way though. In fact, a 10mm bolt would be a bitch to try and slam into a 3/8" hole. round peg/square hole kind of thing.

I just accidentally chopped another rope last month so I should have plenty of old ones (but it's still hanging out) Wonder how that would run, or if it would just be getting in the way>? Jim mentioned that the fixed line on LOTLP was put in during the 90's I think he said. You must be the only person doing routing maintenance out there and haven't gotten to that yet, I'd have a fear that a rope would eventually break on someone at RB.
