Hee Hee, my backyard these days (almost). Probably got some snow on it these days though. Looks like the North Pole is made of Gneiss.

Did ya know: Some guy just got refugee status from your country in ours. He has some condition for which medical pot is helpful, and he wanted to move here to be free to grow it without harrassment. Jean Chretien, our pm, has promised a bill in the spring that will decriminalize personal possesion (up to 1 oz is the number being thrown around). He is an outgoing pm who never had much time for Clinton or Bush, so it might just happen.

I can get about the same vert in an hour on the hill than you'll get all day in the b/c. Especially if you are breaking trail. That said I love the b/c too! It is the soul of the sport.

$385/2 does not equal $295

Great points mattp. I would guess you are probably right on about the beacon'ed travellers being with people who new how to rescue them. But that is part of the point isn't it? I would guess that the hand or piece of clothing wasn't an issue though, as the article is about transceiver effectiveness, and concludes that transceivers are effective. I don't think they make you safer in any way. It just seems that they might improve your chances if you should f%#$ up.

If you have boots that fit... Smartwool Light hikers in the summer, Ski ultra light for, well, skiing, and Ex - weight for ice and stuff. No liners needed. Plushest socks I've used.

Important announce re: freshiez and smilies...
snoboy replied to snoboy's topic in British Columbia/Canada
My tradition of first tracks at Black Tusk on Halloween, was certainly disrupted this year. We ended up going a whole momth late, and the snow sucked then too. -
They are all wrong. It is the brew pub at the Howe Sound Inn & Brewing Company (HSBC)

I thought we need a new smilie for freshiez, since it seems to be snowing here in BC finally! How about: :J (it's a snorkel eh!)

I'm glad no offence. I was worried you would take some of my post the wrong way. Except it's snoboy not "snow boy" The B-vox could be confusing while you are setting it up, if you weren't familiar with beacons in general, or weren't prone to RTFM. In practice it seems to me that the factory settings work very well, as it comes out of the box. If you need to change settings, then you probably know why and what you are doing. If you don't, maybe b/c skiing isn't your thing. I mean an F1 has transmit/recieve, as well as 5 volume settings, which could be considered options, no? They certainly can be confusing on bad days. X-1 has twice the range of what?? And Avman over on tttips.com didn't seem to think it was anywhere near the published range. I would love to actually try out an X-1. I like my old F-1, and continue to use it also but I think the B-vox is an improvement over it. That's why I bought one.

"or very nearly so" = not completely buried This isn't specific to the PNW (ie terrible ted's ?), but applicable to the whole question I think. brief article on survival rates comparing with and without beacons So, the numbers say about 2-1/2 times better chance of living? Sounds worth it to me. Still bad odds though

And if he's a guy like me, he would also love a subscription to "Cook's" magazine. Awesome detailed recipes, for good, basic and fancy dishes. No ads! Unless they are taking graft for the reviews of stuff! Yummy!

[edit] Beck said,"the Barryvox and The Tracker are digital beacons but are very easy for an inexperienced user to use", but now he says,"I think the Barryvox would be EXTREMELY confusing while in the adrenaline of a real live accident" [/edit] I don't know how many times this has to be said, but: "The Barryvox does not need to be confusing. The options are set up ahead of time. The only options available in search mode are analog or digital." As for the X-1, I think this is pretty damning: From the www.telemarktips.com Avy Safety forum (bold mine): There are other impressions in the same thread but this one seemed pretty well thought out.

Good advice, one thing to add - When the bag is sopping wet, as it will be coming out of the bath, be very careful picking it up, as the weight of the wet down can tear out the baffles. Make sure you get under the whole thing.

You can get an "international drivers licence" for free(?) at BCAA, or AAA.

My biggest leap in ability came when I learnt to distinguish rational fears from irrational ones. When you have a good piece at you waist and you can't see the next moves, and you don't move up, well that's irrational fear, and if you can control it, you will go far. When you have a shitty piece 5 feet below your feet, and you 10 feet above a ledge, and you can't see the next hold that's a pretty sensible time to get scared!

I don't know what size you are, but you might look into the Wild Roses P-system.(?) Wild Roses web site They are an offshoot of OR that makes girl specific clothes. I won't tell anyone that you're wearing girly underwear!

In reply to all the people who don't like the Alpine Bod: I used i tas my only harness for years, because it was cheap, and it was the most comfortable!! I used the tubing and cord loops too. They kinda suck, but the best tip I have is to make sure the cord is really tight, it seems to make the loops stick out a little more. You could maybe do two layers of tube too. Like Something 7mm OD inside something >7mm ID. Dunno, it might work.

Funny, I was wondering when this was going to get dragged up again. Yikes. On leading limits: I lead up to 10+ trad, TR 11-, and lead 10- on bolts. Is that fucked up or what?? I think it is OK to lead trad to yyour limit, if you know what your limit is, and you are a competent trad leader. Blah blah blah. Good thing we got rid of Anna hey?? She was a real hazard to herself, and this board

Shittiest gloves I ever owned are the same Mixed Masters Dru Likes... Mine lasted less than one season of Skiing with about 5 days of pure ice thrown in their. Seams blew out, liners blew up, etc. Friend of mine hasd the exacty same experience. My current faves are: Patagucci Stretch Triolet, with $7 wool liners in them. WOOL ROCKS for gloves, and more. They are the only thing I've paid full retail for in ages, and I still love them. Remember WOOL ROCKS! Wool trigger mitts w/cheap G-Tex mitt shells are good too. Try craft stores in Newfoundland, or get an aunt or someone to make some. All in all, noone makes a good glove. My dream glove would probably end up costing about $300, and then they wouldn't make it in XXL anyway.
