I use mine without leashes and a strike attachment. I like them for two reasons and don't for one: 1. It protects my hands. On occasion I will climb without gloves and they protect my knuckles superbly. 2. My hands are just the right size for camming my middle-pinky fingers in the fang. This helps me pump out less quickly (though I still pump out quick) as I don't have to grip my actual ice tool. Feels funky with gloves on, but it's pretty secure. 3. I don't like them because they prevent usage of the clipping point on the spike of the tool. I had to drill through the fang to attach my umbelicals for those times when dropping a tool is bad news.

I'll try to put up photos later tonight if time allows.

Oh, I should add that we walked up to the Emerald and it was pissing water over the ice. It was definately climbable, but I would recommend a poncho and snorkel with the customary face mask

Well, Americans wanting to be Canadians is nothing new. Canadians wanting to be Americans is something to behold -

Wow!! Simply Wow!! Thinking about how much faceting and hoar frost I saw the weekend before last, I decided to go ice climbing this past weekend. I think this cold layer of light unconsolidated powder will probably be giving BC riders problems for a while.

Looks pretty good  I've heard rumors of stuff around Lake Pend O'reille, too. The boat ride past the submarine base still spooks me out though  -

Nice find Dru. Am I the only person who finds it ironic that there's a creek with the name of an American state in Canada (the home state or our great president none the less). Dru is really a closet Canadian cowboy. -

The dropline has fallen. Nice job J and A  Hey suckbm, glad to hear you're okay. I tried out my umbelicals for the first time this weekend, and found that they caused just as many problems as worry about dropping them when you don't have them. Back to the drawing board for me... -
Wow!! That's pretty cray. Glad you guys made it out okay. You seem to have a knack for dodging falling particles of mountainsides Jens.

Looks like some nice ice, guys. It's good to hear that some of the private land owners out there are willing to have some of us tramp around on their land. May they have many years of good Karma. -
I tripped over mine yesterday, gotta shorten 'em up myself. Nice Pics. Sounds like fun

Climbed around on Children of the Sun and Champagne yesterday. Drove as far as the punchbowl and everything is pretty much in. Cable looks leadable, H2O2, Zenith, Salt and Pepper. If you are a brave soul, you could possibly cross the lake on the ice and do some of the routes that are in pretty fat on the West side of the lake. Temps are looking favorable for this weekend as well.

More nice stuff ripe for the picking. I'm wondering how many gullies and coulee's get ice where there's no road or easy access out there in the desert. Maybe Scurlock could do a few reconaissance flights  -

I heard rumors that he's a bit lost as what to do now that he did the Rupal Face. Steve is definately high on the list of all time greatest all arounders and deserves mucho props, but I still think that there are/were others greater. -

I think the definition of a "Climber" is moot. My reasoning behind this would be that most of the true greats from Messner to Bonatti all started rock climbing as teens for the most part, and graduated into alpine mountaineering. Maybe I should have stated, best all arounder. Whatever, some good names have popped up so far. Maybe... -
climbers. Yeah, yeah, the one having the most fun, right Seriously though, there's been a lot of pretty serious mountaineers and rock climbers coming straight outta of da PNW, wurd . To name a few: Whittaker's, Wickwire, Viesturs, Simonson, House, V. Anderson, a few that post here even. But what about other countries that most of us Americans never hear about. The Russians had a pretty serious investment in their climbers before the "Iron Curtain" fell and their country was split up. Hell, Boukoreev used to live in Seattle for a while and he wrote about alot of his old comrades whom he trained with in the Russian programs that had to kick the habit and find "real" work. So, back to my question, what country has produced the strongest climbers to date and is it a simple matter of geographic position (big mountains nearby) or a genetic fluke that might cause it?

We usually end up taking someone's kidney's and or liver and leave them in a bath tub full of ice. You would fit in nicely OrganDonor, you should stop by for some fun. Seriously, we're all a pretty mellow bunch of dirt bags who love to talk about everything from climbing to politics. I usually sit over next to the people talking about climbing though.
