"This is called Manifest Destiny. We, the settlers of the United States of American, were given this land thru God's providence. The end result was unfortunate but the "right has the might" given by God's word." Taking the "no think" approach to religion and history, eh? Sheesh. I apologize, you are correct. The route name is an extrEEEEMly important factor [/QB] Yeah, the route name is exactly what the Doctor was referring to. There's certainly nothing else to take into account like is the route dirty or clean, is the rock good or bad, is the gear good, is it runout, is it fun or an awkward suffer-fest, does it get a shitload of traffic, does it weave all over the place, etc. Come on, a beginner who obviously is not very familiar with the area is asking for advice. Why respond with some smartass crap about looking at the topo when you could actually help them? Or do you like hearing shit like "look at a topo" when you ask for advice on a good route?

Isn't it called "Saturday?"

Insurance good, medical bills expensive. DFA, like Jon, is insured through his job (PacificSource -- EXCELLENT company in this Doctor's experience, and not an HMO!), and now wouldn't go without it. After many visits to the orthopedist (no referral needed), a 1200 dollar MRI, a 9000 dollar surgery, extensive physical therapy, another MRI (no bill for that one yet, but it'll be big), and a few prescriptions, there is no fuckin' way DFA would go without insurance. Even the PT and Doctor's office visits add right up at 150-200 bucks a pop. Ten dollar co-pays (or 50 for surgery) beat the hell out of thousands of dollars in bills later. Just figure that at 150 bucks a month, it will take you about eight years to pay as much into the insurance as one surgery and the attendant care would cost. Pretty good deal.

Arthroscopic Surgery - Shoulder
Dr_Flash_Amazing replied to mr.radon's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
The Doctor went through shoulder surgery for a labral tear recently. Be prepared for physical therapy to be exceedingly painful for the first month or so as you try to get your range of motion back. This was not a pleasant surprise, and DFA was not warned . Not any fun at all, but push yourself to stay with the stretching exercises, as falling behind is kind of demoralizing, and progress is slow. Just bear down and work through the pain, it will definitely pay off. Also, don't expect to be back at it 100% for several months. Shoulders don't heal lickety-split, and they're quite easy to re-injure, especially once all that choice muscle you used to have is basically gone, which it will be. Hmm, that all sounds kind of doom-and-gloom; sorry. The Doctor's doctor told him it would be 3-6 months to full recovery, so who knows? Your shoulder could heal way faster than DFA's, so you could be back at it sooner. Anyway, good luck, and here's to a quick recovery! [ 10-10-2002, 10:28 AM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ] -
You wish you had this guy's gumption, you half-assed excuse for a climber.

Thunder Dome, Battle Cage, whatever. It's all chain mail and crossbow pistols as far as DFA is concerned.

Oh, PLEASE! You're not going to start in on how bands like Rancid and NOFX are sellouts or something, are you? NOFX has been at this shit since the early 80s, and continues to rock. They have never done shit for MTV. Fat Mike's record label brings up tons of bands (granted, many of them are weak), and supports them whether they're making tons of money or not. They might sell out concerts, but they certainly haven't sold out their values. Rancid turned down something like 1.5 million dollars from one of the major labels, and is made up of an ex-junkie/street punk squatter, and three working-class guys from union families. Hardly well-off suburbanites. Regardless, they've done well because they continue to innovate and rock, and not because they're turning out focus group-approved pop-punk and compromising their music to get rich. Hell, they have fans in and have been members of some of the bands you probably think are "real" punk (i.e. the Ramones, The Business, The UK Subs, MDC, US Bombs), so what does that tell you?

You're probably not climbing 5.12 yet because you're too dumb to tie your own shoes (SK told us all about it, buster). [ 10-09-2002, 02:14 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ]

The bands I mentioned did give a fuck, and it showed through their music (X comes to mind just now, another punk band). To me, the spirit of punk is a "don't give a fuck" attitude about reactionary norms, "fitting in", conservative effetism, or any other form of suffocation and fear. It has nothing to do with style, or the nihilistic generalized pessimism that it came to be understood as in some circles. So in this sense, J. Krishnamurti was punk, Jesus was punk, Nietzsche certainly was punk. Thelonius Monk was punk, Coltrane was punk. Fucking Johnny Cash was (is?) punk. Some dated dried fruit plucking chords that make a similar sound to a musical genre classified as "punk" twenty five years ago is NOT punk, in my view at least. Jeez, you guys take things so seriously, it's hard to have a conversation with you! Fuck off, no one gives a fuck anymore!

"And if yer really punk ya don't give a fuck." True, true. Always fun to chase a pointless discussion with no correct answer around in circles for a while, though.

By leaving the C out of "fuckoff" in his e-mail addy?

DFA's not too ruffled, don't worry. Anyway, the Doctor is of the opinion that terms like "punk" and "hippie" aren't all that pigeonholeable. Confining "punk" to only mean one thing is pretty limiting and un-punk, no? For the sake of continuing a totally futile and yet not climbing-related discussion, where do you draw the line for what music qualifies as punk and what doesn't? What defines where you draw that line? Is it the era in which the music was made? Politics? Background of the band members? Record label? Musical style? Inquiring Doctors want to know!

Why don't we call you punker-than-thou, and call DFA stoked on new-school punk rock. We can call Green Day pop, though. While you're chilling at home with your bullet belt, listening to Christ: the Bootleg (on vinyl, presumably -- CDs are definitely not punk enough) and wishing CRASS would do a reunion tour, Dr. Flash Amazing will be going apeshit in the circle pit at the next NOFX show and having a shitload of fun. Ain't that what it's all about anyway?

Everyone is fun to make fun of if they're different from you. It's not like DFA automatically hates anyone whose tastes and income or fashion don't match up; you get judged on what kind of person you are, and fuck all that other crap. Making fun of people is an enjoyable and usually harmless pastime, however, and not to be discarded.
