you should have gone over to take some photos of the worn keyboard and such

So if someone built a gate onto I-5 for people to play dodge-the-car for $5, would they be liable if someone gets decked?

sweet Winter, I can hardly wait for some carnage shots. glaaaad you're okay rob.

It's 44°F right now at 7000' on Hood. Unreal! Please note that if you want a future in politics the correct term is "global climate change" not "global warming". In addition, I think the argument can be made for climate "instability" if not "warming".

Check out Ian McCammon's Heuristics in Avalanche Terrain paper at: http://www.snowpit.com/ (look under articles) He visited Mt. Hood with PDX Mtn Rescue for some training, and presented this study. Quite interesting how he links it to advertising, etc. Makes you feel like a chump when you think of all the times you did this stuff!

The skibowl hat is priceless. Look at what skibowlers are resorting to due to the snowpack.
-
Are you saying people should be free to do lift-accessed laps through uncontrolled 35°+ terrain? Just clarifying.

maybe they could jack up that new treadmill that NO ONE uses and make it a slab simulator. they could put large spikes behind it to simulate fear. a pit of crocodiles or vera katz with a cup of coffee would substitute nicely.

There were many tracks already in Dutches Draw before it released as well. Some of the photos of the crowns on these slides are outrageous. You would get hurt falling off of them. Standard snow pit analysis would be useless to detect this weakness, unless you drive around the backcountry in a Bobcat. I think making people climb to reach OOB terrain is the answer. If you make resort skiers do the slightest bit of work, interest seems to drop off quickly. It seems silly to advertise this gateway to the backcountry, then when an accident occurs, just say "hey we put a sign up there, it even has a skull and crossbones". But I have not been there.

"visible humidity" (dug from the archives of the Mt. Bachelor reports) "smells like pineapples" (another Meadows gem)

I have had the same luck with Patagonia. When you buy one of their products it's as if you enter a contract with them.

Yeah Saturday started out good for a few hours but deteriorated by around noon. I busted home in anticipation of some traffic issues, and because i was rimed up to the point a lift op said "dude, you look like an icicle".

I'm always skeptical about media reports on this stuff. Who knows what really happened. On a related note, someone made an interesting comment on another board about the meaning of "Considerable": That said, some of the best days out there are in the considerable range, as we well know.

http://www.nwac.noaa.gov/~nwac/products/OSOMHM Check out the 1:00pm readings: 42°F, relative humidity 100%, AVERAGE winds 26MPH with gusts at 42MPH and 0.1" of rain. And then Meadows' ski report: Weather: "Mild and overcast with precip" Surface Conds: "soft and very carvable" LOL

just like in skiing, it's easy to spend way too much money on ski tuning gear. here's the essential stuff, in my opinion: cheap iron w/o steam holes (usually set to "wool" setting or lower) don't even think about using it for clothes after you have waxed with it plastic wax scraper some universal wax metal wood finishing scraper quality file (for flat-filing the bases and for sharpening your metal scraper) ptex cord or candles (the cord is more durable and has a higher melting point, but requires a ptex iron to melt and use) ptex iron (I find a standard soldering iron too hot) a good brush edge sharpening thingy above all, for good base repairs, a sharp metal scraper is key. keep it sharp during your scraping with your file. some vices are also nice if you want to get good repairs, though I have done without them using the kitchen counter instead. this can be VERY frustrating, but good ski vices are expensive. don't breath the fumes.

I think it all depends on conditions and how much you are willing to risk getting your car stuck. 4WD often just means you just get more stuck farther in. We ran into some challenging drifts to bust through. Some folks were able to drive all the way to the entrance to THOS and phantom falls. Last year in February we made it to near GBU (after fording the river a few times) but did not want to risk driving over the ice layers further up on the river. I guess it's all about how much you hate walking and if you have a second vehicle or winch kit to haul yerself out. It also helps if you know where to sneak around some trouble spots. The year before last my friends didn't even make it down to the river and hiked it in.
