  1. I have done this as a run a few times. It is called the "Timberline Trail" (#600, I believe). 2 days would make it pretty fun, with a camp on the north side somewhere down in the meadows. It is a beautiful trip, and if you have not been in the area that much, worth it to take your time over a few days. Many people do this hike over 3 or 4 days. The trail is usually snow-free by mid summer, though if the split in the jetstream is maintained through the rest of the season, it should open much earlier. The tricky parts are the river crossings. A girl died last year trying to do this in a rain storm.
  2. PETA is way out of control sometimes, but I don't think anyone can look at a Nebraska feedlot and say there's not something wrong with that.
  3. cruel and unusual MisterE, cruel and unusual.
  4. Those are good questions fairweather. I believe native salmon runs are one of orcas' primary food sources. Engage firestorm. They also feed somewhat on bottom-dwelling species, which are also considered overfished, so perhaps some tighter regulations on comm/rec fishing. As top-level predators, they are considered more susceptible to pollutants concentrated in prey moving up the food chain, so maybe some action on this front. There are other factors like underwater noise from boats, along with the exhaust they leave on the surface. In short, it could be a ton of stuff. Aside from the panda bear, orcas are perhaps the most charismatic of charismatic megafauna when it comes to environmental rallying cries.

does that time machine work as well as Napolean Dynamite's ebay model
  6. The ankle warmer thing is a good idea, and not just for sitting at a belay. Ballet dancers have been doing this for years with leg warmers to combat the lack of coordination at the feet, associated with mild cooling of the body. One of the first signs of hypothermia is stumbling, and this lack of circulation to the lower legs is the reason why. You will actually be more coordinated with your footwork if you warm your lower legs in the cold weather. Leg warmers: not just an 80's fashion accessory.
  7. Yes, I remember Bend as a sleepy little community as a little kid. I see the same thing happening to Sisters. If you go off the main strip, there has been some startling development in the direction of the farm fields towards the three sisters. I always liked that view of the farms with the sisters as a backdrop. Enjoy it while it's still there.
  8. after the nuclear holocaust, all that will remain will be the cockroaches, printer cartridges, off-brand viagra, and nigerian atm statements.
  9. hold on, I haven't installed the turnstiles yet. on a positive note, it looks to be in way better condition than the last time you attempted it TG
  10. kinky. Yep I am bummed about the skiing but it is a good chance to work on the rock stuff. Frustrating how skiing seems to come so natural and subconsciously, but I have to work so hard to see progress on rock. Probably need to just mentally ease back and let it flow a bit more, as with anything.
  11. oh, I don't think that would be a good idea.
  12. hah, yes. I'll have you know, DFA that not only have I been climbing the most sporto of routes at smith recently, I have even been receiving iBeta from the legendary hex-humping texplorer at times.
  13. if you are talking about the ramp that cuts up the cliffs, yes it is fun, and longer than you think. you still have to finish via the chimney on wy'east. It can be soloed, the crux was getting on to the ramp through some featured rime. Then again, anything can be soloed.
  14. it must be fun running a search op when the search area is "somewhere on rainier"
  15. if we're talking alder, there should be a minimum cutoff of at least 5 minutes of being suspended in air by the alder. I'd much rather deal with devil's club than a quality alder grove.
  16. I'm so glad I don't run a climbing gym in portland
  17. a great weekend of skiing! can you believe it?

  20. I think you should send Fiduciary Agent Pedro McGavin's email address to Senator Gbenga Ogunniya
  21. Just an update if anyone was concerned, wheetabix is still available in the states, thank goodness.
  22. The Paradise visitor's center was my next guess too.
  23. I bet that harness is the direct result of walking through the Dihedrals area at Smith.
