i never met don, but i know several people who knew him - based on them, and on the pictures of don, which show him always w/ a smile, i'm gonna assume he believed in life as an enjoyable, not a solemn, endeavor - if you knew him and thought i was crapping on his memory, i apologize - every wake i've ever attended was fun as hell, mostly b/c we spent all our time remembering the good shit about the guy who died and telling jokes - you must be very sad indeed at his passing if you can't enjoy a good old fashioned mustache joke! again, my condolences for those who knew him.

On the way out we managed to reverse off the side of the well packed snow on the road in to the bank of icy crap snow, high centering us and putting two wheels off the road. Thus ensued the multi-hour procedure of come-along winching, swearing, pushing, shoveling, and wheel-spinning. The final addition to our successful extraction attempt was the front passenger floormat, placed under the rear wheel. Dave shouted "The floormat conquers!!", which provided lots of laughs in our exhausted state. very innovative - i mighta preferred our last such experience, where we just chilled n' smoked all kinds of groovy things while waiting for the audi super-commando-a-team to parachute in w/ their wunderbar extraction equipment!

the end of june is generally a shitty time for climbing anything interesting on hood, sorry. if you want somethign spicey and intersting on a volcano at that time, look to the n side of adams or rainier (may i recommend the ptarmigan ridge or liberty? both very cool)

great shit - that last picture is frak'n sweeet! so did ya'll lug all your bivy shit up the route and back down the s side or are you too afeared of having your crap stolen? don't know why more folks don't do a light weight bivy right at the base of the route - very early/fresh start on the route and a quick/easy descent down the spur and you're money!

ha-ha, but it sounds like there's less to bitch about, no? there are still plenty of other places right there to climb that aren't effected and the ban itself doesn't necessarily last 6 months or prohibit the reopening of areas that are uneffected (the uber-popular se corner and young warriors routes at beacon, for example, go nowhere frak'n near the peregrin nest on big ledge). also, and not to knock tieton too much, it's just not nearly as cool a place as beacon, so its harder to get worked up over any of it being closed.

i think my favorite bad-weather climb of the s side was when it was in the teens in the parking lot, winds near 50 mph at the summit, and i wore my 8000-meter-down-to-my-sasquatch-knees-mega-parka the whole day, in addition to goretex parka, fleece sweater, expedition underwear, balaclava, hat, goggles, down mitts, etc. like being inside a space-ship - very trippy!

they caught about 50% of the booze i sent my brother, even though i strategically put it into mouthwash bottles - maybe they didnt' think a simple soldier needs 120 oz of listerine?
