  1. awesome story!
  2. i dunno, the dude i encountered was a much smaller guy, middle-aged
  3. I would have been pretty steamed in a car too. As I said before, I could have disposed of the wood legally for free in the dumpster for my apartment. But rather than the wood go into a landfill, I wanted it recycled or reused. I should not have to pay a premium for recycling or reuse. There are three reasons one should pay to go to the dump: - so you don't go to the dump in lieu of regular garbage service - extra fees for garbage beyond what normally fits into a single can - extra fees for garbage with special needs And yes, you will never see me run a stop sign on my bicycle. Will I track-stand and California-roll through stop signs? Just as much as cars do, with way less the danger to anyone else around.
  4. LOL I didn't want to get started with him on that.. "Sorry, we don't take pressurized gas canisters." "But this is not pressurized." "Yes it is, it says so." "No it's not. I depressurized it. See the hole?" "But it used to take pressurized gas." "But now it's just metal. Every damn website on the internet says that this is the procedure to recycle them." "Our website doesn't say so." "Because the govt doesn't want the liability of telling people to pierce something possibly pressurized and flammable." "You still can't leave it here." "Go stick your dick in that nail hole (it should be about the right width) and eff off."
  5. My fair share? Excuse me? If I wanted to just get rid of the stuff, I would have tossed it in the dumpster behind my apartment. I made the extra effort to get the stuff recycled properly, and I have to put up with a whole bunch of crap. Don't get me started on fees for electronics.. the fees should come on the sticker price, and it should be FREE to recycle later. Making people pay to recycle, which encourages them to illegally dump and get away with it, is retarded.
  6. Yeah, ice axe would be great too. But they are concerned about weight on the webpage.. do they really intend people to depressurize canisters in the field? The only situation I can really think of where wanting to depressurize a canister but not being at home or at a car is if you're PCT thru-hiking, or something similar. In that case, you could probably get by with a sharp rock as the awl and another rock as the mallet if you don't have a anything better.
  7. I was off to a good start when some younger city workers up front cheered when I showed up on my bike with a backpack full of stuff. Then I went to the entrance with the weigh station and met the quintessential bureaucrat. Apparently he have never seen anyone show up to the dump before on a bicycle. I was there to recycle a steel garbage can (free) and some wood (about 75% of which was reusable). The dude wanted to charge me $15, the price for bringing any amount of junk in a sedan. I explained to him that the sign says specifically cars, not bicycles, and he told me to take it up w/ city council. I then pointed out that I could put my backpack (had all the recyclables in it or attached to it) in the next car that showed up, and it would still be the same price. He then said the extra weight could change the cost (if it were a pickup truck), and I was like, "Dude, I'm carrying it on my back. How much can it weigh?" He still tried to hustle me for $15, and I was like, look, if you don't let me recycle this wood, I'm gonna go to the beach and burn it. Isn't the city trying to reduce carbon emissions? Finally he relented. It should have not been that hard.
  8. http://www.prolitegear.com/snow_peak_canister_puncher.html how about a good ol' nail?
  9. If they keep it up, they will need to pay that money to haliburton so they can live in a green zone, away from anarchic mobs of jobless wanting revenge
  10. we watched it live in 2nd grade on TV in Florida

Ya, academic publishing is the biggest scam out there. They purposefully update the editions of books every year (often with minimal content changes) to hurt the resale value of older texts. Thank goodness for international editions available for a quarter of the price, legal or not.
  12. i'm all confused about tax rebates. the dems opposed them under bush. now obama wants them to arouse the economy. but now the pachyderms are against them?

It is. There are at least four profiles in linkedin with the job title: "editor in cheif"
  14. The first part of the article implies that a glory rod might be truer than a glory hole.
  15. i don't care about the tax break.. i'm too poor/unencumbered to benefit from a nonstandard deduction. sandman, that's a good idea too. i'm sure there are soldiers in iraq/afghanistan who would like it.. maybe even the 10th mtn division? any ideas how to make contacts and get stuff sent there? (my concern would be that it truly reaches climbers over there, rather than someone who would appreciate it as much as a sports illustrated)

You can go to an engineering school and take less core, though it will be harder to score.
  17. i have a full reading set, but also have these duplicates: mint 0-8 still in the box near-mint #10 rather than try to auction them to the highest bidder or weasel as much money as i can, i was instead thinking of doing something like charging a lot for it (just out of my ass, like $35 for the #10 and $600 for the 0-8) where you donate the money to Central Asia Institute https://www.ikat.org/make-a-donation/ and upon me getting a copy of your receipt, i give you the mags... is this doable (tax shit might be weird)? anything i need to be weary of? it would make me happy to unload the dups for a good cause (i'm moving to a new place in Seattle in a few weeks).

    printing

At home, the only time I need to print is when I have a flight and am printing out the boarding pass. I use online services for photos. Print at home only in black&white.

    So Damn Sick!

    - get at least 8 hours of sleep every night - minimize time exerting in the cold air - minimize your alcohol intake - eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water, and give it time

    oath

it's not a split infinitive. infinitives are of the form "to (verb)". there is some form of splitting, but otherwise it's future tense, active voice.
  22. AWESOME!!! As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

should Obama have said it the correct way, instead of repeating what the chief justice said, or should Obama have said it the same way the chief justice said, to honor the "repeat after me?" though note that Roberts finished with "So help you God" which Obama translated to "So help me God" not quite a literal repeat i guess that means Obama passes the Turing Test
  25. There's likely a correlation that folks with worse driving records have more workers comp claims, both from increase in incidence and severity in injuries from past injuries, and from risky behavior. Knowing the driving records for a set of people in aggregate could be used for a more accurate prediction of workers comp.
