I'm just glad the Repubs in Congress had some sense and realized "too much power, too much money, too fast."

That current rate can do whatever it wants. If you have an existing CD locked down at a certain rate, then you should expect a letter in the mail from JP Morgan/FDIC soon explaining what will happen. You will keep accruing your ongoing interest, but JP Morgan can set a date upon which to change the terms/rate (lower it), and in turn, you would be able to withdraw the CD without penalty. It's really an economics game for JP Morgan.. on how much they need capital now vs. what interest rate do they really want to pay. The pain in the ass will be all the paperwork for transferring IRAs from one bank to another, especially making sure you don't lose your annual "free" transfer that few personal bankers understand.

omg, check out this interview transcript w/ katie couric http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/25/eveningnews/main4479062.shtml palin is friggin' clueless

There are plenty of businesses with balances over $100k that would not have been insured, several I know moved. I'll let them know they are "retards" I was referring to personal accounts within the FDIC limit.

when you say depositors, you mean FDIC-insured deposits? how many retards honestly think the sky is falling? i'll move my WAMU money only of JPMorgan changes my CD rates and I can find better elsewhere

"You're here on a good night," he told the audience. "So far none of our guests have canceled." He talked about daredevil David Blaine's feat of hanging upside-down in New York's Central Park for 60 hours. "They just left the guy hanging there," he said. "It's the same thing McCain did to me last night." He described Hilton - Thursday's guest whose celebrity was once used in a McCain campaign ad to mock Democrat Barack Obama - as McCain's first choice for a running mate. "Here's how it works: You don't come to see me? You don't come to see me? Well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day," Letterman said. Noting that McCain wanted to postpone Friday's first debate with Obama, Letterman said running mate Sarah Palin wanted to put off her debate with Democrat Joe Biden until after Election Day. Letterman said Palin's meeting with world leaders at the United Nations was like "take-your-daughter-to-work day." Letterman's Top 10 list was "surprising facts about Sarah Palin," read by citizens of Wasilla, Alaska, where she was once mayor. No. 10: Palin "sometimes calls John McCain grandpa." Later in the show, Letterman couldn't resist another mention of "that John McCain" while chatting with Hilton, who replied, "I heard he dissed you. He dissed me." Milking the moment, Letterman consoled her: "You had a little run-in with him, too, didn't you?"

Pretty much. Cool, guess that means I'm as smart as Bush/Paulson, since I suggested it first.
-
Isn't the proposed bailout, going an extra $700B in debt, basically equivalent to printing more money?
-
The funny thing is the split isn't really partisan. Many repubs are POed about it.
-
Letterman was on top of his game last night! McCain suspended his campaign and cancelled on me because he's a senator and should work on the economy. So are Obama and Biden. But Palin's a gov, and the Alaskan economy is just fine. So why isn't she taking over for McCain? Isn't that what VPs are supposed to do?

Well, why is Rossi ashamed to admit he's Republican? He's listed his party as "prefers GOP" because he polls a number of points higher than when he lists "prefers Republican," that's why he wants to confuse the voters, and the King County Democrats want him to wear his affiliation clearly. Doesn't sound desperate or pathetic to me, it sounds like both sides trying to control the conversation to achieve their objective. You know, sort of like a political campaign. I have one question. Does Rossi get campaign money from the Republican party? If so, that's what he should be.

they should kill the penny. round all cash transactions up to the nearest nickel. lincoln's on the $5 anyway, so he's still getting respect.

Extra money can be printed in extreme moderation. No one should be punished by having their money disappear by having chosen the "wrong" FDIC-insured bank. Instead amortize the losses through a slight devaluation of currency. Why do you think that a slight devaluation from extra printing will result in a downward spiral toward hyperinflation? Do you think that letting people lose their FDIC-insured money is a better outcome?
-
Hopefully enough of us realize that we have money we can leave in for the long term, and it will be just fine. This long-term money (e.g. retirement) can support any temporary needs.
-
I guess the point is if things are bad enough that people are losing their bank money, then we're really f'ed up -- it would be as bad as printing more money. Maybe the best thing to do in that case is to have mandatory "bank holidays," like when they close the stock market when shit hits the fan? What do you think should be done if Farmer Bob goes to the bank to withdraw his life savings and is told there's no money?
-
If the FDIC is not paying up, it will cause a vicious loop of more and more people pulling money out. Very bad. Best thing for the govt to do if there's no other choice than for FDIC not to pay is to print more currency.
-
Do you really think that the FDIC is not going to pay up? There would be riots in the streets, lynchings of banking executives, and the voting out of everyone in Congress if the FDIC couldn't/wouldn't pay up.

I have a decent chunk of money with WAMU earning 5%. It's FDIC insured, so that's A-OK with me.
-
The chimney section after the long undercling traverse out left? That's like a 5.2 chimney and has chockstones and stuff to allow for smaller pro. Totally unnecessary.
-
It's the same selfish couch-potato morons who think that climbers should pay for rescues who also think that bicyclists should be banned from the roads. They're a bunch of idiots.
-
And how many billions the fed will lend to other businesses. Ahh.... Exactly.. aren't the American automakers asking for something like $50bil?

There's some great art on that page, including "The Bean" in Chicago's Millennium Park. If you've never been to there and seen people participate with the installation, you can STFU. I really like the art in Seattle.. without art, our cities would look like East Berlin.
-
Well, you can look at it as 1/3 to 1/2 the bikeride up to WR North Twin.

Each Seal is probably worth a million in terms of recruiting/training alone.
