  1. It's standard practice to do background checks on new hires, partially to protect the company should the employee go postal and victims sue. Regarding this thing, you'll need to see what you signed away when you join, and go from there. The way they worded it at first seemed a sleazy way to implicitly get your consent.
  2. GGK, do you remember when a marketing study of CC.com said that the average viewer was male, active, middle-aged, and wealthy? Guess there are plenty of better-off people out there who will buy gear no matter what the price.

Yep. Flowers smell and appear more attractive to get pollinators. They give the bees nectar. The bees adapt to see flowers better, e.g., in uv, carry pollen better, become social, etc Gary, I don't really have any problem with what you're saying but aren't you making an 'a priori' assumption. I mean, you do have a Ph.d., right? Isn't this the point that Stephen Jay Gould had tried to express, not by casting doubt upon evolution, but rather to clarify it? For instance, take this example: The Jesus Christ hypothesis for the evolution of flight There's a fine rhetorical line here, but I'm going to have to go with what I think STP (and Gould) say. Flowers don't smell good for the purpose of attracting bees. Flowers that smell good attract bees, so they survive better than those that don't. Mutations and recombinations either help or hurt chances of survival inadvertantly. They have no pre-determined 'purpose'. Yep I agree w/ you two, just kept it relatively short and concise (and unfortunately misleading/ambiguous) because I was spraying on my iPhone while on the bus.

    What about bees and flowers?
  6. I do not see why he is such a threat. Does he hold sensitive information? Is he exceptionally charismatic? If he is a mere pawn, there are thousands more like him
  7. I dunno.. you wanna ask? Maybe someone here knows.. http://www.military.ir/index.php
  8. - our military-industrial complex LOVES Israel - our failure with Israel would embolden China re: Taiwan - support for Israel is in the self-interest of any ambitious American politician
  9. Here's a fun article. http://www.angelfire.com/art2/narod/opera/
  10. That's a good question. I guess it is pressure from Egypt's neighbors and Egypt's more extreme factions, as well as a desire to keep the Palestinian's someone else's problem and not their problem. Though maybe allowing in refugees now is in Egypt's best interest, to reduce Iranian influence? Our mess w/ Iraq has given Iran tremendous power. (Back when Iraq was the most powerful, Israel was secretly helping Iran.)
  11. It's fundamentally a Palestinian problem. They have no economy, so people turn to violence. They can't get an economy until the violence stops. Furthermore, their population is skyrocketing, making them even more impoverished. On top of all that, Egypt and Jordan give minimal humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians and don't let them emigrate to them.
  12. I wouldn't call it a "direct" response when they assassinate folks 10 years later, even when those folks have grown out of terrorism, or when they assassinate an innocent in Norway from poor intelligence.
  13. I read the article again.. it's half decent.. my main gripe now is it being bundled in the same mag as an article on corduroy vs khakis for outdoor adventure, and for a half-page ad showing a bunny hill at Tahoe occupying what should be a picture of Colin in the alpine (sorry, the shot of Colin cragging topless near Leavenworth ain't alpine).
  14. Iraqi, my bad. Yeah, that was a wild mission. Pretty crazy that they evaded radar detection by Saudi Arabia, Jordan, or Iraq!
  15. I thought it was a mediocre article.. seemed disjointed, perhaps gutted too much by the copy editor. The PI article a few years ago was better, and Colin's Going Square on Alpinist was the best.
  16. Also the bombing of the Iranian nuclear plant. Then there was the revengeful Wrath of God, though some would argue that those folks were assassinated because they remained to be threats.
  17. As long as your initial conditions f(0), f(1) are both not 0.
  18. Gary asks why can't the US join the 3rd world. Way to peg the retardometer Impeachment is more on the lines of voters recalling/removing someone from public office than a jury convicting one of a crime. I don't see what's so 3rd-world about a supermajority removing someone from office.
  19. i don't understand why the illinois legislature is being so slow.. can't they just vote to impeach, have no trial, and vote to convict? the legislature would be delivering a unanimous f-u to blago.
  20. Is there some sort of ransom etiquette I don't understand?
  21. I don't understand. The pirates who they are paying the ransom to on the Ukranian weapons ship.. how do those pirates get back to shore once they get their ransom? Why can't they have an "accident" on the way back?
  22. Drivers pays a pittance, considering the wear on the roads, the pollution, and the thousands of bystanders killed annually. When is the last time a bicyclist has killed a bystander?
  23. Taxes for local roads = sales taxes, business taxes, property taxes Gasoline taxes, car tabs, etc., do NOT pay for anything more than a mere fraction of local roads. Highways are funded largely from gasoline taxes, but some amount of my sales taxes goes to highways. A cyclist who does not drive subsidizes cars.
  24. No, you're the idiot. You said: That sounds like support to me. Furthermore, you later noted that drivers pay for bike lanes but did not mention that bicyclists pay for roads. The topic of licensing/taxing cyclists goes up there with restricting/licensing climbing.
  25. They need to stop helicoptering people in to be guided up WR Pigeon.
