I was at Icicle buttress watching Dave & co getting rained on when the chopper came by to see if they wanted a ride.
Apparently they soon noticed the guys with the orange blankets up 2000 feet on the other side above the Mountaineers Lodge. It looked like there were two sites about 500 feet in elevation apart. It was wet up there. They were in the gulley to the east of the buttress. The top party was above a step and the bottom party was down and east a ways.
Probably over a dozen rescuers up there.
Hope it wasn't too serious.
McDonald peak is a great hike or climb depending on your route. If you look at the west ridge, you can go up and over Sheeps Head and up the rocky arete. I've only done it in winter but I've heard it has been done in summer.
Or go up Mission creek (?) to the north and bushwhack up the glacier drop zone. There is an old logging road that gets you up to about 5k below Sheeps Head. It takes off from the end of one of the section roads that cross the highway. Get a Lolo or Flathead forest map. I think the road is on there.
For more information, talk to hunters. And watch out for bears. They are up there and healthy.
Run uphill hard for weeks so you don't have to think about oxygen.
If you do DC, wait for the groups above to clear the skyline so you don't get pummled on the lower traverse.
Or get up there before them and enjoy the sunrise from 12K on the top of the cleaver.
No need to hire a guide.
Follow a crowd.
If you get in whiteout conditions, stay one the trail and wait for someone to come along and bail you out. If it's a Saturday you'll probably get trampled.
For training, run up the hills.
Each time you do (over weeks), push it a little harder until you are sprinting up them.
You need to get the oxygen transfer system working (lungs to legs) properly.
That will be overkill but you won't care about getting winded on Rainier.
Raf and reefer were a unit but Limestone of that quality changes. It has been a long time since Raf even lived there unless my sources were smoking too.
Good work out there Marty (et al).
I have had many fun sunny days on those rocks and always wondered who did the drilling.
There are a couple really nice trad lines out there too.
I will be at Banks Fri-Sun. With little girlz but grandpa too. Could get out for a few climbs.
We will be camped to the west of the Barker canyon boat ramp.
I have some old wired stoppers I would sell. They aren't "light" by today's standards but they are cheap and in good shape.
As for the rest of the deviants on the thread, even though they talk trash here, they tend to be nice in person. The Newbie forum IS supposed to be newbie friendly though. So I think you should spank those bad boys.
I used to almost never wear a helmet at all. Then I got married to a worrier. Even though I got divorced, she passed on the worrying to my daughter. Now I almost always wear a helmet but I have a very light weight one for alpine lite stuff. It could probably be ripped in two by a rippling dude but it is a hell of a lot better than nothing and I'm too fat to carry anything heavier. So I'm glad they made it.
Cheers!
