  6. My experience with structured climbing curriculums suggests that your highly motivated student will succeed with just about any learning process.
  7. The outdoor wall was designed for teaching beginner Mounties climbing technique, so the walls are pretty slabby and well featured, even without holds. There are a couple nice hand and finger cracks, though. The boulder may be a little more interesting.

  13. Sounds familiar. I got it using the machines. Nothing dramatic, it just started hurting when I was going through a weightlifting cycle. Cut back on the weights, but still hurt. After over a year, I could start again without pain. Haven't tried pushing it since. Never had any problems with that shoulder before.
  14. He's got to be extremely frustrated, we're extremely frustrated.
  15. Why would anyone carry a cell phone and not a headlamp? Hi Mommy, this is Jens. I'm on the second pitch of R&D. Can you have some hot cocoa ready for me when I get down? Mommy? Mommy?!?
  16. Leashing dogs doesn't always prevent problems. I've seen owners leash their snarling dogs to the base of routes, but the dogs could cover the nearby trail preventing folks from passing. This has been done at the base of Japanese Gardens, for example.

    Tag Line

Aid climbers will typically have the second (tag) rope clipped to their harness. If they need gear that is down at the belay, then they'll yell down to the belayer to tie it to the rope and the leader pulls it up (tagging gear). This only works if the leader is less than a half ropelength from the belay, unless they have a haul line as well. Shortfixing is used when the leader can solo. The leader leads up to the next belay, pulls up all the slack rope, and ties the middle of the rope into the anchor (fixing the rope). He may also do this with the tag or haul line as well. Then the leader continues leading to the next pitch while the follower jugs the rope and cleans the pitch. Once the follower reaches the belay, he can tag up gear.
  19. Lemme guess. You also use the elevator to go down a flight of steps.
