  3. What idiots! They should know better than to go to Taco Bell. While in B-ham, Diego's is the place to fill up.
  4. . . . If thick leather "bushwack gloves" is one of your ten essentials. . . . If your legs are "butt white", even in hottest summer because you always wear pants from fear of stinging nettles, devil's club etc. . . . If you end up paying more than $200/yr for a FS pass, Volcano Pass, Ranier Climbers Permit, Snowpark Pass, ONP/Rainier entrance fees, overnight feets etc. . . . If you know that the light grey and the orange lichen are less slippery than the black. . . . If your chock pick doubles as a "gardening" trowel.
  5. Is the rd open to the tr hd?
  6. Finaly Paradise un-chained! Are either the White R Rd or the Stevens Canyon Rd *plowed* yet? How long after plowing do the gates open?
  7. How do you get a mountain guide off your front porch? Pay him for the Pizza.
  8. Have a gripe? Contact Congress Do not feed The Bear. No handouts to rangers. No fees. Last I looked fees from the demo prg went for signs, enforcement, and new outhouses. Very little to actual resource protection. Contact you Lawmaker: You should find all the contact information you need at the Federal level. http://www.house.gov/writerep/ http://www.senate.gov/ The WA State Level website is: http://dfind.leg.wa.gov/

  10. I like the 3 ft splayed foot catspaw. Its only drawback is the lack of a hole to tie a lanyard to, so I put 3 or 4 prussik wraps down from the neck w/ 5 mm cord and epoxy the prussick knot. 3M sells a good clear epoxy that can be mixed w/ rock chips from the base of the cliff to fill in bolt holes.
  11. >>>in sober retrospect, I'm sure that it was my soaking cloths that were the culprit.<<< I think you've got it. Remember, a sleeping bag is just a big therm-mass. It is very good at keeping a warm-mass warm, and a cold-mass cold.
  12. >>>My trips have shown120mL/person/day . . . Way too much. The park reccomends 1pint/person per day (16oz). I go w/ 11oz/person/day and have enough fuel to make a 1qt. hot water bottle. I would go as low as 8oz/person/day if: I was melting, not boiling, and had a heat-exchanger. Have all stoved identical (can scavange parts)Know your stoves and how to fix them. Get them cleaned at MSR.
  13. How do you know if there is a fighter pilot at your party? He'll tell you.
  14. Where to start? -----------------------You can buy short sewn draws w/out carabiners. $2.95 and often on sale for less. -----------------------Look for Rock Empire brand from the Czech Repuplic. MEC and Nelson carry them. -------------HOTKNIFE!!-------------If you can't cut it w/ a hotknife (soldering iron attachment) - then you've got Kevlar wich breaks down after repeated bending. Spectra is a much better choise. The firemen use a kevlar escape line but retire it after use or after 5 yrs, wicherver comes first. Leave No Trace - when possible, not just when convinient.
  15. Behold the Climber Behold the Climber! He Riseth Up Early in the Morning, and Disturbeth the Whole Household. Mighty are His Preparations. He Goeth Forth Full of Hope/Rope. And When the Day is Spent, He Returneth, Smelling of Strong Drink. And the Truth is not with Him! -unknown The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and a leak in your tire. -unknown
  16. Let me know when you find that boot. "The Boot" will have a cushioned heel, be full-grain leather, have a stiff plastic thingy above the Vibram sole(instead of a full shank, for cramponing and edging), be re-solable, fit step-in crampons, and be as comfortable and weigh as light as a pair of sneakers.
  17. Looking to go up there soon, all pks look fun. Matier is a walk-up, at least in the winter.
  18. >>>Just goes to show the futility of negotiating >>>with the "let wilderness take over" crowd. Don't confuse special interest groups (the "let wilderness take over" crowd) with bureaucratic rail roading. Public comment was simmilarly ignored over the issues of the Fee Demo prg, Mt. Rainier "cost recovery prg." and Denali climbing fees. Face it, your gov't is concerned w/ its own growth agrandisement not your opinions. I now open nominations for the Cascade Climbers party.
  19. Dwayner - this Busses thing. So, you do not approve of car pooling or other ways to reduce vehicle impact?
  20. I agree with gearbot in "Here is my story about the Mountaineers Basic Equivalency Test:" An AMGA guide would not pass the test. Nor would a real guide (Europe school). Is this intentional? What effort is made to prepare exp'd climbers for the test? Just some thoughts . . . Know that the Basic Equivalancy Test is to test people on the methods used to teach the Basic Climbing Course - not to test specific skills (i.e. z-pulley). Like all climbers who value self preservation, Mountaineers are leary of accepting "outsiders" or unknown climbers untill they have climbed w/ the new person. Theoreticaly, passing the Basic Eqv Test may allow you to *lead* some climbs. Personaly, even if a climber comes to me w/ 10 yrs of exp and 100s' of climbs, I climb w/ them as if I was soloing untill I see thier (in)competence for myself. The lack of outsiders and new blood helps perpetuate a fairly stagnant system. Other techniques and ideas will take hold only slowly. This does, however, alow for uniformity between branches of the club. I will bring this up at the next Tacoma Basic Committee Mtg. Steve F, I would like to address this issue club-wide. So, gearbot, now that you know what is expected of you, will you study the *Mounties Method* and pass the test next yr, or are you going to whine?
  21. From maps and http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/wrec/d3_ccs.htm#mapyes, it could be done. But would *you* do it? 10 miles and 8,000ft to the summit.
  22. After over a month I finaly hooked up w/ my randone ski in front of the old Paradise R.S. Thanks to those who carried it down. Thanks to the Ranger crowd for leaving it visable there. Thanks to rd crew for not running over it w/ the blower.
  23. Other than Rainier, Hood, and St. Helens, what volcanos and what routes have good rd access right now for an easy two day ski? S Side preferred.
  24. Has petzl removed the reference? I do not see any alerts on the main page or the belay device page.
  25. I'm for the 3 day option unless other climbing or difficult climbing is to be done. Day 1: Hannegan Pass to Whatcom PassDay 2: Whatcom Pk and camp at Perfect PassDay 3: Summit and out.
