Conditions above muir? Did Sean Sears make it up?

>>>the $150 fee implemented for Mckinley/Denali climbers....but it sounds like they are using the $$$ to support climbers and cover lagitimate programs.<<< I have yet to see any causual data. There have been less deaths, are there less Koreans? Do we need an (allouette) helecopter on permanant standby in May and June? >>>The $15 fee at Rainier is also reasonable for Muir and Schurman to cover the cost of waste removal. But why do climbers on other routes have to pay this fee?<<< Good question - I think they just want our money. I heard that waste removeal is done by the WA Nat'l Guard for free - as training.Remember when the fee was being touted as a rescue fee? Then the lawers for the NPS saw the liability issue. I say let the Mountains be. They have been there longer than we, remove the rangers and red tape, alow people to make their own decisions.

>>The $5 fee is waved if you are in the woods for religious observance. << Sorry, a federal judge in OR rulled against this argument last summer.

jhamaker replied to jhamaker's topic in Climber's Board
Rock gyms, no, I want to go climbing.Smith too cold for anything interesteing except possibly an aid route. Red Rocks comes to mind, mabey next month when I have a full wk. -
Ideas? Also:Anyone notice if slopes are scoured and safe on SW-W aspects after the wind on Sun?
-
Current conditions? How deep do you sink into the snow at 4k ft? How many miles/ day can you make while breaking trail?
-
Subject should be "Sucks at x-c skiing"Even beginers should have been able to skin up to Snow-bowl. Bets are off however for the descent.I would have taken the beginers to Copper Cr. hut. My basic x-c class made it half way there in just a few hours. Just be thankfull you did not have to break trail up to Hight hut on Feb 1. What usualy takes 40 minutes took the hut mgr 5 hrs. Thank you for ensuring that one more set of gapers will never want to go into the mountains again.

Unless the weather clears - I'll see yas in Tacoma town.

Try the established rec.climbing
-
On Rainier - 50ft of 1" hemp rope in a 5 gallon biscuit can. Various summit registers - w/ only one entry.

>>>clove hitch into belay, fast, clean and bomber Not so bomber, as it turns out, it will pull through after x many pounds of pull. Don't make it your primary anchor knot.

Anyone been up to Chair or Mt. Snoq. *since Sunday* to look at the ice?

I lost a good climbing partner for 5 yrs once. Fortunately, he eventualy got divorced.

My favorite sport is to make the first ski tracks out of the parkinglot. I ski over logs, through streams, down cliffs, etc - then back to the parkinglot to see how many lemmings I have caught. I bet I could make a few bucks finding the lemmings and selling hot chocolat, maps, ski and pole splints . . .
-
Generaly the summit log is returned to the club that placed it, then someone from the club renews it. UW also archives some.

This might break the Muir pot thread! The Mountainfears:They have an extreemly high percentage of novices come back alive, this can't be said for other novices. Free Gear!Follow the classes and climbs around and find gear! The mountains are crowded. Large groups need to mitigate their impact. If you don't like the impact created by large numbers, stop supporting agencies that sell the mountains - REI, MEC, RMI, Outside, Climbing . . . and start educating groups on minimum impact. Vast #'s of Outward Bound gapers are in the hills - but one rarely encounters them.

There is a product called the "Whizmo" (sp?), found in hospital supply stores? Pharmacy? Where you get crutches and wheelchairs. W/ the Whizmo one can draw one's name in the snow! True! I've seen it done, but will not mention names.

Any Winthrop/Leavenworth Track Skiing yet? Where is the N Cascades Hwy plowed to on each side?

There were 3 people smoking pot in the hut, there were 3 others there that didn't mind at all, and finally there were 2 other people there who we all talked to, but didn't have the guts With those numbers would I have asked the smokers outside? I'm one who occasionaly picks up dropped cigarette butts and hands them politely back to there owners. Would you go down to Morton w/ a friend, into a bar w/ 3 loggers and 3 other people, and start bitching about logging?

Your e-mail?

Almost certainly possible w/ a Silveretta or Ramer binding.

Still in Anacordes? I'm considering putting "Winter Climbs" back in print. I would like to talk royalties. rsvp: jhamaker@onebox.com
