  4. That I remember, there's a ledge with bolts is closer to the base of the route and a little further out on the East Face. I believe the bolts Mike pictures weren't there the last time I was. Then again, that was about 8 years ago... Going down the southern chimney descents seems neither faster or slower than descending the route with two ropes (I've done both). The traverse under the east face back to the base to get our packs went pretty quickly. Spotly's "north side chimney" might be refering to the right hand option of the first pitch (?).

  18. There was one that spanned a side canyon of the Kern River canyon just east of Bakersfield that was probably 4 times the size of the one in question. The water came out of a tunnel in the east wall, travelled through the flume maybe thirty feet and then disappeared into a tunnel in the western wall. The water was just ripping through it too. Despite the long hot hike we had just done to get up there, we steered well clear 'cause it just looked really deadly.
  19. I haven't got the picture handy, but the loo at the lower saddle in the Tetons gives one a silhouette view of the Sawtooths in Idaho around sunset.

    END of an ERA

I bought my kid the last issue because he's almost 9 and really into shit like that. He laughed all the way through it. The cover mentioned it was the last issue and that the explanation was on the inside. Inside was the explanation that the staff was being into space by aliens for an undetermined amount of time.

    Minty!

From eBay: Some 'interesting' prose to describe the items in the pictures: "Besides the three slings, this lot contains 11 great, vintage and in at least two cases RARE items! Everything is in great condition, ready to use or display. Several are unused! Rare and unused is, I'm told, a Chouinard "Crack'N Up". It is the item that looks like an anchor, about 3.25 inches long. Crack'N Ups slot into thin cracks and then weight on the offset shank then cams them into place. So, 3000 feet up, no finger holds? Just reach up and place the tiny tip of a wing in an incipient crack and step into the attached strap! If you have the nerve! Rare also, in unused, minty condition, is the Chouinard RURP (Realized Ultimate Reality Piton). These are super in incipient cracks or as a key chain decoration. I once zippered 9 of them on a climb at Seneca Rocks. The tenth stopped me! Scarce if not rare is the LEEPER 8 inch long extraction tool for retrieving deep nut that have "walked' into the crack past your reach. Not common is the single SMC bolt hanger. It is unused and minty. I did use the Salewa (Sticht) 9mm belay plate for a haul, but he CMI figure 8 belay device is new, unused with only tiny initials in it. The four chocks are interesting. One is a SMC "camlock" #3, maybe used once. The second with a Bonaiti carabineer attached to the sling is a #6 "T". The third on the wire sling is CMI #4 cam locking. And the fourth, orange in color, is a "T4". I am told these T's are from Forrest Mountaineering and are called "Titons". Great and scarce vintage stuff, but look closely at the sharp pictures and decide the value for yourself."
