  1. you okay, rumr? ;-)
  2. unfortunately it looks like i will. not that seattle is so bad, but ... that's unrelated. i would definitely like to make a trip to the methow. have never been and hear it's pretty amazing. is there any skating up by snoqualmie pass?
  3. jeff hansel is rad. coolest cc.com'er who isn't actually on cc.com. tell 'em hi for me, would ya?
  4. found him - thanks! ;-)
  5. [...] can someone send me his new phone number? i got an email from him today but the number i have for him is old - it's been disconnected. [...] thank you in advance!!!
  6. thanks for all the info so far. it's something i've been wanting to try for years now; just never have - mostly because i don't have the gear. but while i have a real job that pays real money i might as well spend it on some more gear. :-)
  7. i want to try some cc and skating this winter. i know basically absolutely nothing about them. i wanted to know how boots size - like real normal shoes or do they get weird like ski boots? also, what is the difference with cc touring and skating? (meaning, what makes the boots better for one or the other?) thanks!
  8. hmm ... i am tempted. i haven't climbed for shit this summer but that shouldn't hamper me too much on those grades. well, except for the leading bit. not sure how my head would be for that. but i've never been to static and would be keen on checking it out as a sort of farewell to summer ...
  9. sweet pics, marko. sounds like a great trip! some of our party were hoping to ski at least one of those "snow" slopes back in early may ... but they were pretty much just ice then as well. hopefully they get some good snow this winter!
  10. i was trying to avoid saying "wood" ... but i'm totally in that camp. my current at setup consists of naxo bindings on dynastar little big fat skis. (and for tele i have targa bindings on k2 public enemies.) not that wood is the be-all end-all, though - rossi's b2 and b3 also ski too damp for me. ps - there are some havocs and tele daddies and whatnot on evogear.com ...
  11. you're right - i edited my previous post. i was thinking of volkls when i said atomics. (except for the tele daddy, of course.) i'm not in any way saying the havocs are bad skis; they just didn't make *me* ooh and aah. other people love them. (snoboy? ) they were too damp for me. i generally like a ski with more energy. k2's for instance. (i am also smaller than most guy skiers and unisex skis my size tend to ski stiffer.)
  12. thanks, dru, but i hate doing dishes. i think i will resign myself to sticking it out in my current abode for the time being ... and focus my energy on some more important things. like new skis! ;-)
  13. I wasn't aware soft was a good thing in a ski. some people like soft skis. i'm not sure why. i would think they'd only be "nice" in superlight pow, and even then i wouldn't be convinced. (i like a little more backbone myself.) i really think the pr is overrated, but you sure see a lot of people skiing them at resorts. i haven't skied the sugar daddy. the tele daddy rocks, though! atomics on the whole are pretty sweet skis. they are solid and still energetic. i would definitely go there ... [edit: on second thought, that's not what i meant to write. i meant that VOLKLS on the whole are pretty sweet skis ... (i got a little confused about the brands.) while i did think that atomic's tele daddy rocked, it is basically only good for one thing - and i wouldn't go there for a single set-up.]
  14. mmm ... snow ... mmm
  15. i personally wouldn't go for either of those skis. i have skied them both. but it really depends on you - what kind of skier you are, what you're going to be skiing, what kind of ski you like ... etc.
  16. i'm not about to pay $850/month for rent! (thanks anyway.) and as i am quite capable of reading want ads, my hope here was for a more personal connection.
  17. i *want* a cottage on the lake, but i will consider just about anything. anybody need to sublet their place out while they go on some fantastic overseas climbing venture??? anybody need a roommate??? anybody???
  18. rumr, i HATE it!!! c'mon bg ... you know you want to move back ...
  19. tele'ing is a whole different ball game ... honestly, i think you could be "learning to tele" [the bc] for the rest of your life - no matter how good of a downhill skier you are. lessons are definitely the way to go. really.
  20. here's an idea: move to ophir and rent me the master suite! :-) seriously, dude ... if you ever want to move back, i'm sure we could work something out ... can't you get the wife to do it? then we could all go bootpack at silverton toegether, performing mass slave labor just like all the other ski bums.
  21. dude, don't you remember how far away silverton is from telluride? i posted the progamming thing b/c it sounds like a project that can be done remotely ... hint, hint.
  22. Yes they do exist. For the most part they aren't worth knowing. Definitely do not make the mistake of dating one not saying it's better not to take your time learning, just saying you don't have to spend lots of money at a resort to do so. if you really want to do it right, you will take time to learn the right way - which means taking real lessons from real instructors. you can tell who's had some good instruction and who hasn't. do you just want to do it ... or do you want to do it with style? when i first started skiing, i went out and bought. you can get a really cheap downhill setup if you shop around - closeout boots, cheap-ass skis, inexpensive bindings. probably spend just as much on that as you would renting gear for a season and that way you can use it whenever you want and don't have to worry about skiing over rocks. (which is really fun, by the way! ) mmm ... snow ... mmm.
  23. i would love to get a pair of dynafits and some superlight midfat skis for longer touring ... but for most of the stuff i've done my naxo's have been better than fine. they are as bomber as any downhill bindings i've used (maybe even more so than some) and they have a much better feel. unfortunately my current at set-up is heavier than my downhill one! (damned fat skis!!!)
  24. i don't know, b-rock. i know guys who learned on teles in the bc. sure, it may sound like a painful way to learn, but once they get it down they are miles ahead of the guy who started out at the same time as an inbound skier. and just think of all the money he'd save on paying for lift tickets! an at setup can be an expensive way to go, but if you're not picky about gear you can probably throw together something usable for cheap. especially since you're a guy - lots of those around with used at gear. higher end new at stuff will run you approx. ... $400-500 plastic at boots $400-800 at skis $300 bindings then there's skins, poles, ski crampons, pack, avy gear ... get used gear if you can. shop sierra trading post and evogear and other sites for deals and closeouts on new stuff. i got my at boots for half price directly from bd's site. if you work in the outdoor industry, you can get pro deals from some manufacturers for some things. if you want it, you will find a way. and ... it's totally worth it!!!
