I'd rather ride with somebody who's artful in avoiding avalanches, and knows how to use their beacon should the need arise don't insert your own words to change what i said. the x1 is a "digital + analog" beacon; not a "digital" beacon. and don't skew what i said in response to something else. any idiot would prefer to be in avalanche-prone terrain with someone who actually knows how to use their beacon AND who's "artful" in avoiding getting caught up in one. quote: Originally posted by Toast: I think you mean digital then analogue the x1 operates in analog mode from about 60m; then switches to digital within about 10m. the best of both worlds ... so to speak. i'm not saying the x1 is the be-all end-all of transceivers; i just think it's an excellent choice. as is the barryvox.

i don't think i was tippy enough. the more other people got drunk the more they seemed to be having fun. i, on the other hand, kept sobering up and well ... anyway! i just don't like to drink and drive. how about next pub club at the ram in u-village ... that way i don't have to worry about killing too many pedestrians on the drive home ... and if i happen to run into a telephone pole i won't have that far of a walk to my cozy warm bed. they have $1 well drinks on tuesday nights, too. only bad thing is because of that they're super crowded ...

the x1 has both digital and analog functions with the added benefit that it knows when to function in each mode. (no user-switching involved.) reportedly, this beacon has been tested by hundreds of professionals (and also in multi-burial scenarios) ... and while isn't as beefy as the m2, it has gotten rave reviews. i'd rather be skiing with someone who has this beacon and little more than some common sense than with someone with an old beacon who may or may NOT remember how to use it.

You can ski the same vertical, and better runs other places then “muir” . still I got more vertical then I would of buy just going to muir some of us don't go to muir for vertical. and god knows there are better runs with better weather elsewhere. duh. some of us go 'cause we just plain like mount rainier.

forgot to say: the snow was REALLY nice!!! oh, and if you're not skinning up -- and don't enjoy the hell out of postholing -- bring snowshoes.

Anyone ever built an ice climbing wall?

that picture rocks. i'm jealous! -
flat light really sucks. so does super high wind - when you're not sailing. i ran into mikeadam and a couple of his buddies at paradise this morning. none of us made it to muir, but we had an enjoyable run down from the shelter above panorama point. at least i think that's where we were ...

i was there on thursday. i don't think there's much danger of avalanches if you're talking about stuff falling off of the mountain onto the cones already at the base. it was warm, though, so even though it was raining outside it was much wetter inside the caves. i didn't spend much time inside them - they're pretty freaky, not to mention wet, ... and the ice in there seemed pretty brittle. if it stays above freezing i definitely wouldn't go spelunking around in there if you know what i mean. the danger of caves collapsing is not worth that risk! if you just want to tool around, though, there are some vertical walls that extend beyond the roof of the big cave on the rightmost debris cone (as you're looking at big four). you can traverse around on those walls to your heart's content. they're textured, too, (with big vertical suncup-like features) so you can make it as hard or easy as you like. park at the picnic area 'cause the trailhead lot is closed. and have fun - the ice on those walls was damned near perfect when i was there.

might see you up there. if so, i'll be sans leashes, too. ps - you don't have to be a euro-freak to go leashless ... just a freak perhaps.

so, did you win? sounds awesome anyway. nothing like "high" wind sailing to get your heart beating. let me know if you ever need crew!!!
