for technical rock, either take some classes or find someone who will take you out and show you the basics. preferably someone with extra gear if you don't already have some. at a minimum you'll probably want to have rock shoes, a harness, a chalk bag w/chalk, a belay device and a locking carabiner. send me a pm if you're really interested in getting out some time. i took a few newbie friends out last year and have extras of everything except for maybe shoes.
