one fine day I took the family to the MEC and upon attempting to enter Canada had the following exchange with a "guard" Guard: purpose of visit? Me: going to MEC to buy some climbing gear. Guard: (sarcasticly) no stores with climbing gear in Washington? Me: not as inexpensive. Guard: (comences rapid fire questioning) how long are you staying? Me: just the... Guard: what's your address? Me: 246... Guard: how do you get there? Me: uh, head down I-5 to hwy 2 and turn..... Guard: Do you have a gun? Me: What? Guard: Are you carrying a gun? Me: Nope. Guard: Why not? Me: I don't think Canada... Guard: Do you own a gun? Me: yes. Guard: How many? Me: Uh, 4 or 5. Guard: If you have so many, why didn't you bring one? Me: I didn't really have a use...... Guard: If you didn't bring them, where are they now? Me: home in a gun safe. Guard: and how do you get to your house again? Me: Go down I-5... Guard: (hands me my ID in disgust) move along We drive off as he suspiciously watches us. I figure he saw I had a Concealed Carry Lisence and wanted to harass me. what a meanie.

why don't you ask the Gear guy at Outsideonline.com?

They are both on the N. Peak Dru. The route descriptions read pretty close except SC veers right mid height and the EDM descripton doesen't explicity mention getting out of the main couloir. Also Beckey lists the SC FA in February '89 and Nelson dates the FA of EDM as Feb '88. Now we're getting somewhere. This could be another "spindrift couloir" controversy in the making except not enough people have climbed the route here to spray about downgrading and where it actually gains the ridge. FA on both route descriptions are Nelson/Bebie however, the Edition of Selected Climbs I'm referencing is '93. The CAS is circa '96 so why the name discrepency if it is the same route? I still think they are the same one, but I can see how you could get cornfused.

When they throw their ropes down, you and your partner hang off of them so they can't rap down until they agree to let you have the crack. Or you could go climb somethin else.

"High to extreme avalanche danger is expected later Saturday, and widespread natural or human triggered avalanches should become increasingly likely on most aspects and slope angles late Saturday into Sunday morning. Shifting winds near the Cascade passes should also spread the danger to a variety of slope exposures. With the warming, increased snow density and the loading, some large destructive avalanches are possible, with slab fractures of 3 to 5 feet or more involving all of the snow down to the rain crust from mid-February and some of these slides running long distances." Sounds like a good weekend for going to the beach.

Erik: I see you are angry about the way the protesters were treated. But why do you want the mall to burn, I thought you were a peace supporter. Thats not peaceful! Think of it this way, if some war monger was marching around your front yard with a WAR IS GOOD t-shirt and you asked him to leave, would it be not respecting his views? what if he was making your visiting friends nuts and you thought they might go home and never come over to your house again? would you call the cops to report someone tresspassing on your personal private property? And finally, what if there were no more hypothetical questions?

From here: http://www.onu.edu/pharmacy/DrugInfo/herbals/creatine.html Creatine has recently been shown to increase body mass by the probable mechanism of uptake of water into the muscle which provides bulk. This effect has been seen as beneficial to weightlifters because it allows them to put on weight, which is one of their main goals. (5) The difference between highly-trained athletes and lower-trained athletes is a question of debate. Creatine supplementation shows a sharp rise in total creatine in a lower-trained athlete, where as there is no significant change in the total creatine level in an athlete with higher than normal levels because of the individual’s training. (2) In studies with well-trained athletes, there has been no significant gains by creatine supplementation on weight lifting or sprinting. Actually, in some highly-trained sprinters, their sprint times were slower when taking creatine because of the slight increase in bulk due to muscle uptake of water from the creatine. (5) Long term effects of creatine supplementation have not been documented in any study, which is subject for precaution until a long term study can produce some lasting results. In conclusion, the use of creatine is still the subject of debate because of inconclusive scientific results of any beneficial strength increases. In a moderately active subject, there could be benficial increases of total creatine levels, but as the athlete trains more, there will be minimal if any further gains in this level. (5) A bodybuilder would see some muscle building because of the muscle uptake of water. However, in regard to an increase in strength, there is no scientific proof of any gains. There could be some decrease in ammonia production, but not lactate production. (2) Further, there has not been any significant adverse effects documented, but long term trials have not been established. If the bodybuilder wants to build bulk, creatine could help. Unless an individual makes a serious effort to increase strength by hard work, that person will not see gains, even with the use of creatine. Short term gains, at most, is what can be expected from creatine use. It is not in the individual’s best interests, physically or financially, to use creatine over long periods of time. (5)

HB Quadcams some very small and a couple in the mid range(don't really like) CCH Aliens from yellow to the biggest, (they rock) Set of older camalots on long term loan from a non climber friend (good craggers but too heavy for alpine)

I checked out the Golite model at PMS this weekend and it sees a little more durable, more water resistant but not as breathable. I still don't know if either are worth the price.

Drove up to the Monte Cristo Trailhead Sunday, only about 2" of snow on the road past the gate. Could be some big stretches of bare road in the south facing areas.

that guy looks like he's in for some serious rope drag when he reaches the slab proper!

looks really hard!

Yes! One time when I was absolutely famished and out of food, I liked the chocolate off of the top of one and found myself singing along to Barbra Striesand for the next week. I can't imagine what might've happed if I'd eaten the entire thing!

anyone know what the bolt anchor is for on that overhanging boulder just to the climbers RIGHT (oops) of the 3/4th class chimney up to the big ledge on the Great Northern Slab? just below Sonic Reducer. Noticed them in early January. Looks like you'd have to rap off of a tree to get to them if you were setting up a toprope.

I didn't realize they come in different flavors. They all taste kinda like dirt to me, but I still eat them.
