[TR] Illumination Rock-Rime Dog III 5.9 4/24/04
wdietsch replied to layton's topic in Oregon Cascades
Way to go !!! .... Yesterday as I was driving east through Sandy about 9:00 am you could see I-Rock looking very, very proud, sticking out of the clouds like a giant's thumb. The summit cloud went from Don King to Bozo the Clown to something that reminded me of the McDonald's french fires characters from the early 70's, all in about 15 minutes ... I was headed up to T-Line to at least skin to the top of the Palmer, that "tease" by I-rock was the only thing that kept me from going into plan "B" 'cause the whole time as you looked to the SE you could see the shit comin'. I left the top of Palmer around 1:30. At that time the skiing up high wasn't too bad but once you got down the Palmer in the warmer drizzle .... it sucked big Hairy Mongolian Camel Toe -

ditto ... the "cam" action is ass-backwards. Unlike a tricam which uses the point as the fulcrum, the Camlock "cams" by trying to pull the "point" around the lobe ... essentally trying to make the lobe the fulcrum and the point the lobe. Sketchy ... quite frankly I'm surprised this design ever made it into production. Don't waste your money having them re-slug, take the cash and either buy some tricams or rockcentrics.

replacing old hardware ... fine adding additional hardware ... not fine if you need a bolt ladder go do Hydrotube
-
That is funky but with custom mods, mine tighten top down, the way I like it. The shoulder strap was designed this way on purpose .... to keep the loose ends from slapping you in the face in windy conditions

Does anyone know if any of the shops in/near Seattle carry these? I've already spent some time looking and didn't see them (I'm currently favoring the Osprey Aether 60). Marmot Mtn Works in Bellevue used to carry the Chernobyl

Only for you Will ... Peter Croft a Rap Bolter? Now, far be it from me to question the competency of one of today’s elite, but the photo of Peter Croft on the Incredible Hulk’s Airstream {Hot Flashes, October 2004] makes me wonder if we are really prepared to attempt the routes that are being pushed today. Unless my eyes deceive me, there is a beautiful, continuous, albeit thin crack between Mr. Croft’s legs akimbo. Yet, the rope passes not through desperately placed protection in these small wire havens but through a series of - let me venture to guess - rap-placed bolts. Okay, I am an old-school old fart who ripped his milkman pants back in the days when camp 4 still had drive-in parking and lived through the disco era of Lycra (for my part, I do apologize … what were we thinking?!), but if anyone dared to produce a route involving excessive or unneeded bolts, well, Royal and his vertical police took care of things. Why not let the “unclimbable by today’s standards” wait until tomorrow’s gifted develop the skills to lead and place protection regardless of the difficulty? - Named deleted Lake Oswego, OR Peter Croft Responds: Deleted Name: To begin with, it’s fine by me if you question my competency. I do it all the time. The crack you describe, however, is nonexistent. This pitch and the one above are the blankest corners I have seen anywhere. I couldn’t find a single place for tiny wires, tied off blades or even a RURP. And the wild guess you ventured regarding rap bolts was most certainly wild. I belayed Dave Nettle as he bolted both pitches on lead -a burly effort. I understand your viewpoint but pictures can be misleading. I do, however take offense at your admitting - in a family oriented publication such as this - to wearing Lycra. My God man, it’s like admitting to cross-dressing at the Republican convention. Yes indeed, what were you thinking?
