AOK Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I was hoping for some recommendations on book choices for topos/beta in the Oregon area... All help appreciated. Planning for a big summer of traveling the area and climbing hard. Not necessarily a newbie, but suggestions welcomed! Quote
Winter Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 You need more than one. Pick up the Smith Rock guide by Watts, Climbing SW Oregon by Orton and Portland Rock Climbs by Olson. But ... uhhhh .. for good summer rock climbing you might want to try Washington. Quote
ScaredSilly Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Do not get the state wide guide put out by Falcon. Lots of mistakes. Get the local guides. Watts' book is quite good. Quote
AOK Posted December 21, 2011 Author Posted December 21, 2011 What about "Weekend Rock Oregon?" I've heard good things. And thanks guys. I appreciate it! Quote
Checat Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Ron Horton did an impressive job with Weekend Rock. It pulled from other authors' works but focuses on the "weekend" climber not pushing the 5.11 and above standards. Â What you'll find is Olson and Orton are more complete with the areas they cover in comparison to Hortons piece. Â The criticisms of Bolf and Ruef's falcon piece is warranted. While it pretends to offer climbing areas that other books don't offer, these additions are not adequately covered and you'll be much happier with an Olson or Orton purchase. Â Â Â Â Quote
KirkW Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Hey Paul! Â When is your Moolack guide gonna be out? We're all waiting with much anticipation. Quote
AOK Posted December 23, 2011 Author Posted December 23, 2011 So Orton's climbing SW Oregon looks wonderful! I think that coupled with Weekend Warrior ought to do the trick. When I get to Bend I'll pick something up on Smith. Thanks for the advice... It was cool seeing that Orton's book is actually a collectors item. Woot! Â Quote
Lodestone Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Wow, really?! No advice? Â Â This is a nice book of you can find it. Â Â Â Chad Quote

genepires Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Smith in the summer? Never been there in the summer but it sounds like it can get quite hot then. Quote
AOK Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 Oregon Rock: A Climbers Guide is EVERYWHERE! Is it really THAT good!? I found it for $3-6 in multiple places. Quote
sobo Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 It's a little outdated. Like it doesn't show the retrobolt on the first pitch of Lion's Chair, for one thing... Quote
Lodestone Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 Oregon Rock: A Climbers Guide is EVERYWHERE! Is it really THAT good!? I found it for $3-6 in multiple places. Â Probably not the best guide to have if that's all you've got. It is a fun read though. Portland Rock Climbs 4th edition by Olson is the go to book for Portland area rock. Watts's Rock Climbing Smith Rock State Park is the bible for that place. Others have mentioned the best books for the rest of Oregon. Â Â Chad Quote
AOK Posted December 25, 2011 Author Posted December 25, 2011 I'm going to start with Portland Rock Climbs and I'll get more as I explore different areas. Thanks everyone! Really looking forward to getting out there and leading for friends to top rope! Exciting stuff to come! Peace. Quote
