"That's so gay"

So, for quite some time I've used the term "gay" in a manner that (IMO) has nothing to do with homosexuals -- in the same way that "lame" has nothing to do with people that can't walk. In the past, I've been backed up on this by gay friends.

I believe there is a south park episode that covers this.

However, I've been reprimanded more and more lately (by gay friends) that saying something is "gay" is like using the "N" word. Wanda Sykes apparently agrees.

So, what's the story? And should I also stop using "lame" and "retarded?" Also, are there times it's OK to use it as a statement of fact? For example: "shaving your legs and dressing up in lycra to ride your bike is pretty gay."

Sometimes, saying something is gay is just a statement that it's the opposite of machismo, right? Like crying at a movie or something.

Confusing! I want to be supportive of gay rights, but everything just got so complicated.

TIA!

I am not gay but I have always been offended by that remark and my gay friends as well. I don't know about 'lame', but I am sure that 'retard' is a no no among health and social workers. Interestingly retarded was part of mainstream lingo until relatively recently.

thx. I'm really wondering on consensus on this...I'm a huge fan of equal civil liberties for gays and lesbians (this should be obvious by now), and I certainly don't want to offend anyone (at least, not in that fashion), but I'm not really as sensitive as other people seem to be about this kind of thing.

However, if I train myself to stop saying "gay" in that context, then what do I call my friend whom I catch crying during a movie? I still want to laugh at him, but all the good words are being pre-empted. Soon, I won't even be able to call him a pussy anymore :(

It's troubling.

You call him a friend whom you caught crying during a movie. If you cry during a movie are you gay? A pussy? Retarded? The baby jesus is rolling over in his grave trying to decide what to do with your attitude....wait. There was no baby jesus. Never mind.

You probably dont want gays in the military because you dont think them to be strong or macho.

So am I supposed to hug him instead? Nobody has a sense of humor anymore, that's the problem. It's very fashionable to be offended these days.

Men and women are not the same, and straight men and gay men are not the same. There are distinct differences. For example, women (and gay men) like shoes and cry at movies.

Does that mean they're bad and shouldn't be in the military? Of course not. It just means I get to tease my friends.

Can't we just laugh about our differences, rather than pretending there are no differences?

I love shoes. And hats.

Everybody has a little gay in them. Some people aren't comfortable with that, and they either become homophobes, or they go to the other end of the spectrum and get a cramp in their pussy anytime anybody calls something "gay." Different sides of the same coin.
