panther Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 Martin Volken is by far one of the more competent guides in the PNW and you'll get good quality instruction through him. Plus he's a hellava nice guy and has a teutonic wit that won't quit. http://www.proguiding.com If you decide to go with AAI for some reason ask for Paul Rosser to be your guide cause Paul is just simply a kick ass good guy to be around! Rodchester Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 B-rock: The two day summit climb is a summit climb. It is like an amusement park ride designed to get you to the summit, not to teach you anything more than the required amount to get you to the summit. If you want to learn you need to take classes that focus on what you want to learn. Most of the schools offer 3-4-5 day courses that actually focus on learning, not on the summit. I recommend Mountain Madness. I have been on overseas trips with them to Africa and Peru and they run a good show. I also know many of the guides and they are very competant. Check out www.mountainmadness.com. Or call them and speak with John Farmer. Quote
Wopper Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 I am envious of Dan Larson. He has a gift of making enemies like very few people I have encountered. Dan, use your force for good not evil. Quote
Tom Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Hey brock... I learned at a community college. It lasted a full quarter, lecture one night during the week, climbing or some other activity on the weekend. In 13 weeks, we climbed 8 summits, spent a day at Olympic Mountain Rescue learning compass work, route finding, and prussiks on their training equipment, spent a weekend at Paradise and dug and slept in a snow cave, performed crevasse rescue on the Roosevelt on Baker and so on. Freedom of the Hills was the text for the course, and while published by the mounties, it is a good reference. This was probably similar to the mountie experience, expect my leaders didn't have egos, and we shared the glaciers... The bottom line is go with someone experienced on several different types of trips. Dig a cave and sleep in it. Get up on some rock with someone who is competent and patient so you can learn... mtnrgr Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Dan You're in "Division" weren't ya?. Or maybe The "Screaming Chickens"? Both are shitbag units riding on the reputations of WWII. Anyone everytell you about the "combat jump" into Panama? 2nd Batt was there for 3 days and had all ready secured the airfield. When all of a sudden the Eighty Duece comes fallling, and starts shooting. The only effective fire 2nd Batt received was from the men of the pink beret. And just because you were victor qualified doesn't make you a Ranger. Quote

Wopper Posted January 21, 2002 Posted January 21, 2002 Mtnrngr, don't believe all the barracks gossip you hear and check your history books again. 3/504 PIR (Division) was on the ground in Panama at H-Hour. They had deployed to Panama approx. 2 weeks earlier to attend JOTC. That was my unit and I was in Pre-Ranger at Bragg at the time. Also, 1/504 and 2/504 did not jump in 3 days later. My memory may be fading but I believe they jumped at H-hour as well. If they did not jump at H-Hour it was w/in a couple of hours of H-Hour. By the way, if Larson is anything in person like he is on this board he would have gotten peered out. Quote
mikeadam Posted January 21, 2002 Posted January 21, 2002 It was H+2 that 2/504 jumped receiving near ineffective which was subsequently suppressed by Spectre onsite. It was this spectres tracers that sent everyone running for the fences, not the PDF which were brushed aside with only one initial casualty. [ 01-20-2002: Message edited by: mikeadam ] Quote
