johndavidjr Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 I just think "consumerism" breeds various illusions and stupidity, even among those who think they know better, or perhaps especially so. Something about outdoor equipment really lends itself to this sort of thing. Quote
olyclimber Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 sure. and we're all glad you are championing against this grave threat. when you're done, please save the whales and feed the hungry people in africa. Quote

kevbone Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 all people making broad generalizations are idiots. So, most of the folks on cc.com? Quote

johndavidjr Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 Youtube vid very amusing. So for all your 50-degree calm and clear summer alpine nights in Cascades, go buy a $500 "ultralight" custom-made mini dipsh*t tent with bug-net, made by poorly paid employees of some wannabee yuppie, or Chinese peasant corporate slaves. Whadueyecare? The Wall Street boys finance and profit from the manufacturing gear, whether in Shang Dong or Tacoma. MIT boys (mostly Asian) designed it. You can get your hard-on with your equipment based on price you paid given your own, possibly overpaid, "professional" work. Sellers won't care how or where you got the cash. In most cases, the thing is, how it affects your own self esteem. In this regard, shopping at Wal-Mart will make you believe you are inferior-- a "poor person," or something even worse. Quote
olyclimber Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 this is not your everyday crazy person. he's sprinkling his posts with insights and generalizations that indicate a mentally derailed train, or better yet a ferris wheel off its supports and rolling, careening with screaming riders into the night. johndavidjr Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 I've spent 40 years knocking around outdoors. My climbing isn't remarkable, not even perhaps my focus, but have hit 30-40 peaks in NW and Canada, etc, plus zillions of crag routes. Met dozens of fools over these years, and the MOST annoying have always been those with ill-informed "warnings" (delivered with arrogant superiority) about danger of inferior equipment. Mostly backpacker wimps, but some with greater pretensions. I've used lots of "inferior" equipment, and used with intelligence in the right circumstances, it's the practical equal to anything. Have encountered this type of essentially stupid and extreme prejudice and hostility here at cc.com (Where I'd expect more intelligence) in a pronounced manner. Quote
