FORCED RECTAL EXAM!!! summary: guy gets head injury goes to ER, doc wants to do rectal exam, patient refuses, doc has him restrained and sedated, then doc charges patient with assault when he gets punched in the process. Apparently checking for "tone" in the rectum is SOP for head injury patients to assess possible spinal cord trauma. But it seems pretty extreme to be ordering someone restrained and sedated. And even if you think that's OK because head injury patients can't be assumed to be thinking straight, then it seems illogical to charge the patient with assault. It sorta looks like that doc is on a bit of a high horse (which is a big problem in medical care nowadays). Edited January 17, 2008 by chucK Quote

Oops. Forgot to add comments. Fine with the restrains - often warranted in cases of intoxication/head-injury, but silly to press charges since the assumption is that the guy is/was impaired. Quote

Do you think this also happens at med school while learning anal winking? Or do they hire a homeless person to come in and get winked by the entire class for $20? And FYI the "anal wink" is a reflex when you insert your finger into the rectum and then squeeze the glans of the penis, your supposed to feel a contraction of the external sphincter muscle, although not everybody has it... scheissami Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Ah, yes the bulbocavernosus reflex....when I worked at Grady County Hospital in Atlanta we called it the "Grady Handshake"...the patients were not thrilled. Depending on the trauma, there are all sorts of good reasons to do a rectal exam. People in motor vehicle accidents or fall from height (that might be us) can sustain significant pelvic fractures in which injuries extend into the rectum or involve the prostate (ouch!). Pretty rare occurrences but obviously not things that ought to be overlooked. Quote
